The Lord of the Rings: Conquest Revealed [May 08, 2008, 09:41 am ET] - Viewing Comments

The Lord of the Rings Conquest Unveiled has word that Pandemic is working on The Lord of the Rings: Conquest, a LotR-inspired variant on the gameplay they created for Star Wars: Battlefront. They help fill us in about the project by offering a Q&A with Eric Gewirtz, and far from a Tolkien conversation, this interview runs five pages. Here's a bit describing what the game will entail:

We've got every single battle from the movies and then some. We've got Helm's Deep, Pelennor Fields, Minas Tirith, The Black Gates, and then we've got a bunch of other cool stuff like the Mines of Moria. Weathertop, The Shire. We've got a whole level where you get to play as the evil guys, running through The Shire, trampling Hobbits and burning the place to the ground.

And really we've focused equal parts on the good perspective and the idea of re-creating cinematic moments from the films -- not faithfully so much, but just kind of allowing the player to experience moments that are like the films -- but also really, for the first time, letting you get the chance to play as all of the bad guys. Play as the Balrog, play as Sauron and Sarumon, and really kind of live out that fantasy fulfillment of "what would it be like to really just destroy Middle-Earth? What if evil had won?"

Yeah, I played Battlefront and as far as I could tell, the bots existed purely as cannon fodder.

Holy random insults, Batman! Do you disagree that the bots in the BF games were retarded and completely worthless or were you just trolling?
I played it a bit on the PC version(BF2), the game as a whole wasn't my thing. The bots were competent enough to get by. Mainly I couldn't pass up the opportunity to insult you Seriously though, they were far from 'retarded and completely worthless'. You are talking battlefront right, and not battlefield?

*Sigh*...And here I thought LOTR was an RPG in every sense of the word, not an FPS. I could dig playing The Hobbit or LOTR from as an RPG. No, there wouldn't be any real surprises, but done right...it could be something wonderful to play through.

You should feel right at home in that case.

Yup really lookin forward to this. The Battlefront games were designed with the old gen console hardware limitations, so the maps were too small for large terrain areas for vehicles, I thought. But with the current systems, I think they can have really large battlefields with air battles and everything.

I wonder how they'll manage the lag though, with all that AI stuff running around.

I didn't like the Battlefront games much (they seem like poor man's version of Battlefield games), but I don't think any of those games beat Battlefront in terms of sales. They just seem too... "hardcore." VGchartz.com says the Battlefront games have sold 11 million copies at least. Data for the Xwing games isn't listed but I can't imagine them selling 11 million copies.

The X-wing games are some of the greatest games in history though

Man, I was doing QA at EA two years ago.. and i was like.. "Hey, EA should make a Guitar Hero game with a drum set and a microphone for singing, along with guitar!" Later.. Rock Band.

Then a few weeks later, I was like "Hey, they should make a Lord of the Rings game but with the Battlefield-style gameplay. The various magical beasts can be like vehicles!"

Hmph.

Anyway...
Yo pandemic studios, you out there??? It's me.. Daku! I made the Battlestrat mod for your Battlezone 2 game. I'm graduating in 2 weeks, hire me for... something!

If it's anything like BF, those mobs will be retarded and completely worthless.
You should feel right at home in that case.

16. Re: No subject May 8, 22:07 The Half Elf

Don't forget they will steal the vehicles as well, and you'll just end up at a vehicle spawn point killing them so you can actually put the vehicles to use.

But in LotR I guess Ogre's and Horses should be plentiful as vehicles

16 players on top of 100+ AI controlled mobs
If it's anything like BF, those mobs will be retarded and completely worthless.

For a few minutes I thought they were talking about Star Wars: Empire at War. I love Battlefront 1, and now I think I'm going to buy #2!! Wheee!

.
13. Re: Battlefront=Crap May 8, 18:07 The Half Elf

I would go as far as to say KOTOR1, and the Xwing/Tie Fighter/Xwing Alliance series, EASILY beats out Battlefront's numbers.

And as for lightning my ass... *pets his Ysalamiri* bring it on Jedi

.
12. Re: Battlefront=Crap May 8, 16:56 DrEvil

right, the best selling star wars games of all times were failures.

.
11. Battlefront=Crap May 8, 16:49 TangledThorns

I thought Battlefront was a BF2 wannabe clone that failed on so many levels. Fuck Pandemic. Whoever granted them a license to develop games on well known franchises should be fired!

9. Re: No subject May 8, 16:14 Jerykk

16 player battles doesn't sound very epic.

.
8. Re: No subject May 8, 16:11 Elf Shot The Food

There was an error in the article: it's actually eight players per side, not eight players total.

.
7. Re: No subject May 8, 13:59 CJ_Parker

    ...Jedi's...
You, Sir, are a Star-Wars-unworthy piece of bantha poodoo. The plural of "Jedi" is "Jedi"! Now if your n00bness would please leave this thread before force lightning shall come from the heavens and strike thee down. Thank ya!
