Cool. Glad we can draw a line under it.

Hi Will,

There's genuinely no spin. That line was included in complete innocence.
Oriental slant? Really?? I guess I'll take you at your word, but that's an unfortunate coincidence.

Now I've been made aware of it I've changed it - so hopefully we can all be friends again.
Of course.

I never wanted to not be friends, and I didn't intend to revisit this. When I saw comments this morning saying I was seeing things, I replied before I saw the line was edited, so I then followed-up further to explain my comment to those who didn't see what I was commenting about.

That said: the fact that all of this is taking place on a site called the PC Zone is pretty hysterical.

From the comments:

Hi guys, I've edited this just a smidge - apparently there was an accidental phrase put in that is considered offensive in the US (our words, not Daniel's). Thought it best to change it in case it's something that really pisses people off over there.
"Oriental Slant" is not offensive in the UK? Interesting. "Accidental"? Spin much?

Oh, I see now -- they changed it.

The heading that now reads "Eastern Themes" formerly was "Oriental Slant."

"Slant" is a derogatory term for Asians.

If you want to complain about PC-ness, go ahead, but I don't see how you can argue that "Oriental Slant" is not an intentional slur.

In this point, I think it is that old saw "Thou see offense where none is given".

Is 'Oriental' an ethnic slur now? Somebody forgot to tell the UK
It's almost entirely a US thing, as far as I can tell. I know a few oriental people who happily describe themselves as such - especially as 'asian' covers a pretty damn huge continent.

I see no slur. Unless using the word "Slant" in conjunction with Oriental is supposed to be inferred as an insulting reference to their eye-shape, which is obviously not what the writer meant.

Call off the PC police - it's a false alarm.

Intentional or not, it's amusing.
People need to take that PC stick out of your ass.

IT'S OK TO OFFEND SOMEONE.

I agree, especially since it is a UK site. Blue, have you considered bringing it to "their" attention in a diplomatic manner rather than "ours"?

Which one is the racial slur?

"The Oriental Slant" or "A problem of size?"...

I guess theoretically it has two ethnic slurs. Intentional? Or simply not too subtle? In all honesty, I don't think it was intentional. Well, at least I think not.

Except, you know, it's not a "slur" despite the PC police screaming otherwise.

It's so horribly racist that Oriental rugs, Oriental Blue, Oriental flavored ramen and the general geographic description of "the Orient" have all disappeared from the rest of the world.
