I'm not sure what the big deal is with the modest increase in performance when running on "high" detail. This is certainly not the first PC game released in which the highest graphical slpendor was virtually unnattainable with current hardware. It's simply a matter of future proofing. Play it on Medium today, and then in 2 years, when new, faster cpus and gpus are out, you can play it again on High.
