This press
release announces that Ken Kutaragi will retire from his post as CEO of Sony
Computer Entertainment effective June 19, 2007, to be replaced by president and
COO Kazuo Hirai (thanks
Kotaku). Kutaragi, known as the father of the PlayStation, will then serve as SCEI's Honorary Chairman and as an advisor to Sony chairman Sir
Howard Stringer. Here's a bit: Mr. Kutaragi, well known as the “Father of
PlayStation”, invented and launched the original PlayStation in 1994 and its
successor, PlayStation 2, in 2000. Since the introduction of PlayStation and
subsequently PlayStation 2, these platforms opened up a vast market of computer
entertainment. The two platforms combined now have an installed base of more
than 200 million units in homes around the world, with more than 2 billion units
of PlayStation and PlayStation 2 software titles shipped worldwide. The third
generation of the company’s home computer entertainment system, PLAYSTATION®3,
launched in November 2006 in Japan and North America and in March 2007 in
Europe, will continue to revolutionize the computer entertainment experience
with its immense computational power connected to the network.
After completing the launch of PLAYSTATION 3 worldwide, Mr. Kutaragi has decided
to pursue his dreams beyond PlayStation and to accelerate his network vision.
“I am happy to graduate from Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. after introducing
four platforms to the PlayStation family,” said Ken Kutaragi, Chairman and Group
CEO, Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. “It has been an exciting experience to
change the world of computer entertainment by marrying cutting edge technologies
with creative minds from all over the world. I’m looking forward to building on
this vision in my next endeavors.”

Almost all PS2 games fit on one layer of a standard DVD disc, and that is including the movie cutscene files. It wont happen but what would be smart is for SONY to market a PS3 with a standard dual-layer DVD drive and sell this system for 299 USDollars. Game code does not need for than 9 gigs on the optical disk -- its the cutscene movies that take up the space on the disc. Blue-ray is so very pointless for gaming.

Plus you have alot of people who like myself just simply cannot afford to shell out shitloads of money for a HD-DVD/Blue Ray Player, and or the HD tv for them to be played on. But I plan on getting a 360, so cost wise for me it's be better for me to get the 360 HD-DVD. But then again I don't buy alot of movies. If it's a movie I really want to see I go to the big ass AMC down at Walt Disney World that has all the bells and whistles and watch it. If it's a great movie I'll probably pick it up later. But I do alot of the on-demand stuff. 4 bucks, I get the movie for a day, and don't have to worry about wasting 20 bucks on a dvd.
But in the US, with Wal-Marts having a cheap HD-DVD player, it will defintly help in the format wars. Every time I have gone into the electronics dept people are buying up dvd's like crazy.

Yep I agree, and I love movies from one format & another..but there's no way in hell Im gonna buy anything until this f***king thing is settled. F*k them
"t's not going to make a bit of difference if more movie studios don't pick up the format. The problem with these two formats isn't price, it's the division of movie studios and availability of movies... you buy one format you're excluded from some content as a result, and that sucks if you're planning on something being in your library for any amount of time (i.e, buying it and not renting it)"

actually here in australia the xbox brand is doing fantastic.
I'm sure those 75,000 units will change the face of gaming.
HD-DVD's lower cost can mean that it will be the preferred format, especially if Walmart can sell cheap players. But.

Right on there, you cant get a Wii but the PS3 is easily available..but no one wants it (except the core fanboys who already paid $1600 on ebay). I work for a major publisher..PS3 is an afterthought in the sku's.. Incidentally, we have a PS3 at work..I've never even seen it switched on. The Wii is what people seem to like alot more..

I cant see how Sony will be able to drop the price enough, its already losing money big time with the current pricing. They might as well give it away for free till they go banktrupt then?

Whether you like it or not, Walmart will settle this in the U.S. and eventually the rest of the world (since its the U.s that produces the majority of the blockbuster films people seem to like) thats life pal. smoke a big one.

Equally your a fool if you believe that any single US chain of shops backing one format over another will ultimatly decide this round. If you've never been to the United States, you may not understand the influence Sam Walton has had in the country. There is such a density of Walmart stores here it has become the more or less de facto place to buy many things.

Walmart Germany already sold all their stores. And Germany is not a small game market either. On the other hand, we germans are not very original when it comes to consumer behaviour. So it will probably not make any real difference.

Xbox is the ultimate american brand and really really struggles in any other territory except the US. Nobody would think that just because the xbox1 did well in the US that it won the last round. Equally your a fool if you believe that any single US chain of shops backing one format over another will ultimatly decide this round. actually here in australia the xbox brand is doing fantastic.

the actual sales numbers for both formats are a drop in the bucket compared to DVD's and so small you just cant call it based on that alone right now.

<nods>... Walmart will settle this one. There's a BR blip because of PS3 sales (people buying BR DVDs so they have something to use it for.) but like the initial sales the media sales will die out too. You'd be a fool to bet against the player that's half the price of the competition. Never mind the 30Gb double layer HD-DVD vs 25Gb single layer Blu-Ray argument.

Lets not forget, Wal-Mart the biggest U.s. retailer is brining in HD-DVD players for $299..by xmas. Thats half the price of any player out there including the PS3. With WalMart behind HD-DVD good luck. Further more the PS3 is a B**tch to develop for, alot of game makers are either not even gonna make PS3 titles or relegating it to a 2nd or 3rd outsourced dev to merely port the game from the 360. Thats a fact. Either way you look at it the PS3 is on shaky ground. As a hidef player its tooe xpensive. As a games console hell yea its too expensive. As a platform to develop on its twice as hard to make a game for than the 360..
think about that:)

Dammit nin don't be saying crap like that! Sorry, man, but thems the numbers.
And I wouldn't touch a Blu-Ray player until this fall, once they finally get the Java menu crap sorted out...they SAY that all previous players can be upgraded, but we'll see. I wouldn't bet money on that. (They also said there wouldn't be a format war, and look, here we are.)
