The LOTRO beta boards have seen endless streams of WoW fanbois that claim LOTRO is just a WoW clone and don't realize that WoW stole 99% of its content from other games. That's not even considering that 98% of Warcraft borrows from conventions more or less established by Tolkien in the first place....
And by "established by Tolkien" I'm not saying they were wholly original ideas thought up by that author, either. He established the basis for what would become the fantasy genre today.
There really is no truly original concept when you banter about the originality of Warcraft or LotR.

$5 preorder? |

I've found a couple of people on the net touting the "$5 preorder", where you'd get to play the beta for a month for $5. However, I cannot find this deal anywhere. Everywhere I go seems to be perfectly willing to sell the preorder for full price, which is significantly less good of a deal than spending $5 to play the game for a month and deciding about buying it later...
Can anyone clear up my confusion? Did this deal exist at one point, and now exists no longer? This message was edited at Mar 30, 18:47. |

I can't blame CojakEZ for his reaction to the WoW comparisons. The LOTRO beta boards have seen endless streams of WoW fanbois that claim LOTRO is just a WoW clone and don't realize that WoW stole 99% of its content from other games. I think GamesWorkshop actually has a lawsuit against them for it.
I played WoW for a couple of years. It was fun but it wasn't terribly original and LOTRO easily has enough seperating it from WoW to make it a much different MMO.

And with them comes great misguided references... WoW didn't invent anything except rest bonus for being logged out.
Which lotro also has. I wasn't saying WoW invented anything, merely that you will see similarities to WoW within the first five minutes (you know, since I was quoting someone about it looking like WoW within the first five minutes).
One thing it has the other top dogs don't have is loot. Theres plenty of random loot items that drop for you to play with.
I'm not quite sure what you mean with this one (not flaming or anything, just not sure). The only MMO I can think of with no loot would be CoH/CoV, but I haven't tried EQ2/Vanguard.

If you fucking morons pulled your heads out of your asses for more than 20 minutes you would realize that this game's similarities to WoW end at the UI. (which by the way came out well before WoW) I guess though if you like the shiny cartoon eye candy of WoW then you will not like the game or even bother exiting the starter area.
The stories (thats right, theres a story) of this game is older than most of the idiots posting here. If you want to be immersed in the world of Middle Earth and be a part of the epic story play the game.
If you want to be a wow fan boy fucktard and look for your uberloot, get lost. The game will be much more enjoyable without you.

And see them you will. In the first five minutes, you'll see the little ring above the quest giver's head, beckoning for you to talk to him/her. Very WoWish. You'll see an interface that is WoWish, such as the bags in the corner (doesn't look/work nearly as good as WoW either). The chat system.. well, chat is chat I guess, but also like WoW (linkable text, for example). And with them comes great misguided references...
WoW didn't invent anything except rest bonus for being logged out. (Which EQ2 promptly put in about 2 months after release).
Linkable items in chat? Ever heard of AO? They did that years ago and had SOE follow suit with EQ1, then EQ2, and lastly WoW. Like WoW? no
Radar in the corner OMGSHS!! UO anyone? Like WoW? no
People who have entered the market with WoW don't understand that there were no original features IN WoW. Heck even their content was ripped from other sources (ie Warhammer).
I've played the LoTR beta for a few weeks, duo'd with my wife. It works. One thing it has the other top dogs don't have is loot. Theres plenty of random loot items that drop for you to play with.
It has tons of quests, putting WoW Pre-BC to shame.
Downside? Its not really epic, and if you make a Rohan character, you'll get to share yer newb yard with the other races? Each race should of had their own newb yard, not just the 5min intro instance.
Dwarves start with the elves? Yea. Good Tolkien lore there.

"They've predicted 600,000 players during the open beta."
Not quite accurate. They are releasing 600,000 beta keys. Depending on how you interpret the article, they could be releasing 1million more (totaling 1.6million), or they plan to release a total of 1million keys.
Just because someone releases so many keys, doesn't mean they are going to get that many players.
IMHO, the numbers are simply sensationalism. LOOK WE GOT 600k BETA KEYS!! BEST GAME EVAR!!

Previous comments here have been pretty positive, I thought, but I can understand that the last thing you want to see in the first 5 minutes is similarities to WOW.
What you'll also see, that isn't WoWish, is the starting instance which is tailored for your race. I'm not talking about the starting zone (lotro has that too), I'm talking about the instance. It's not long.. maybe five - ten minutes. But it really sets the mood for the game.
You'll finish that and see your accomplishments, something I've long talked about in previous posts. You'll get some crappy quests, and a few good quests as well. Spend some more time and you'll finish your starter zone via a special instance once again that moves you forward in the game world's time. Continue playing and you'll get to your musical instruments, another thing I love. Play further, to level 10, and you will get to try out the Monster Play (aka PvP with a twist). Destiny Points will become available, allowing you to buff your character further.
The game is WoW, but different, I won't deny that. It won't beat WoW. It won't even come close. In fact, as much as I enjoyed playing it since alpha, I won't be buying it. I'd like to, but I have other games to keep me busy right now (Stalker/C&C3), and after playing for so long, I need a break from it as well.
Since it's free to play for a couple of weeks, I strongly suggest anyone who's at least interested take the time to download it and give it a try (or anyone who's sick of WoW, like I was). The only thing you'll be out is your download time.

Good first impressions aside, Turbine has a terrible track record and haven't produced anything good since the January 2000 AC1 update. With all of their original talent depleted, they are content to churn out me-too MMORPGs backed by big-name franchises. Caveat emptor.

If the game tanks it's because the world has slipped into a recession bad enough that food takes priority over entertainment. This game will be second only to WoW by the end of the year.

Make sure you spend the extra $20 for the Collectors Edition, and then plop down $200 (yes, thats two hundred dollars) non-refundable up front for a "lifetime" subscription so you can feel real stupid when you get sick of the game and the company in a month.
