Firefly Reborn as
Online Universe on Wired News (thanks
Shacknews) has word
that Firefly, the late lamented science fiction television series, is going to be
making a return in the form of an MMORPG from
Multiverse. The official announcement
is expected tomorrow, but in the meantime, Wired is wired with some details on
the game, which may be released as soon as 2008. Here's a bit: What made
the show special was the wry, often self-deprecating humor of its characters,
from the captain with the checkered past to the unwittingly sexy engineer, the
dull hunk of a mercenary with a girl's name, and the mysterious young woman
passenger with special gifts.
The online version will move away from those central characters -- after all,
there's only one Mal Reynolds. In an MMORPG, "everybody has to have their own
story," says Multiverse co-founder and executive producer Corey Bridges.
"Television series can be really good properties to turn into MMOs, because when
you make a TV series, not only do you need great characters, but you need to
create a full, rich, compelling place," Bridges says. "If you're doing science
fiction, you have to really think it out and create an incredibly rich
environment that is compelling in its own right, and worth exploring and going
back to week after week. That's what Joss Whedon did with Firefly."
The universe of Firefly and its spinoff film, Serenity, featured everything from
Old West-style towns to futuristic urban environments, gritty spaceships and
pastoral retreats -- freedom fighters, oppressive government agents, smugglers,
outlaws, mercenaries, trader, townsfolk, futuristic geishas and a race of
corrupted humans known as the Reavers.
Bringing those environments and character types to life as an online game will
be a challenge: Multiverse is not a game developer, but rather a platform
provider whose product is still in beta. Instead of making the game itself, the
company will hire a development team that will craft the virtual galaxy using
Multiverse tools.
"We want to find someone who wants to do something unique and fun and
interesting, not just a re-skin of World of Warcraft or Star Wars Galaxies,"
Bridges says.
Because the underlying technology is already in place, "I feel confident that
we'll see something the public can play sometime in 2008," he adds.

Multi-player ship crews will be a must, together with internal ship environments you can walk around in, interact with your crewmates in, perform maintenance tasks on your ship, etc.
A Firefly-themed EVE-Online ain't gonna cut it.

Firefly was ace and Serenity was top-notch - I can't believe Firefly was cancelled and hasn't been picked up after the film. I downloaded and watched Firefly and immediately after watching them all I ordered the DVD and pre-ordered Serenity. I love the idea of Firefly continuing but I'm not interested in yet another MMO, one which will lack the magic that made the series great (the characters).

I wish Fox would give the rights for the show to the Sci-fi channel so they could continue the series. From what I understand, Fox did give Joss Whedon the opportunity to shop the show around and Sci-Fi wasn't interested. I'm not sure what their reason was, but I would hazard a guess that it was probably a lack of fan base and they didn't want to spend the money to market the show to popularity. I love the Firefly universe and there's no question if you've seen Done The Impossible that the fans are fanatical, but there just aren't enough of them. A small but vocal crowd is still small in the eyss of a network executive.

If they can manage something like that (albeit in an MMO style) and some interesting planets to explore on foot/mule, then I'm sold. I'd be tempted to buy it just to show that there are some people out there still interested in Firefly, even if the game isn't absolutely brilliant. That way other companies can see how to make some easy bucks by being a tie-to-movie game.

I loved Firefly, and I'm getting REEEALLY tired of fantasy worlds.
With regards to Multiverse - As a java developer it was fun to hear that they are using Java 5 for the serverside stuff. A huge cost of MMO development is the serverside. Security, performance, concurrency, clustering and so on. If Multiverse do that really well, customers can spend more time and money on building a better graphics engine for their gamers. Lets hope they do, because I have to agree that the current screenshots are not very impressive.
Still, there are way way too many MMOs around and in development, so I very much doubt this particular game will amount to anything.

i hope you viewed all the trailers available on that page http://www.multiverse.net/games/built.jsp?cid=2&scid=1
yikes. It's nice that shoestring budget indy's have a sorta fairly good engine to work with and i can relate to the hopes and dreams and entrepreneurial spirit of these developers but wow, the trailers really demonstrate the difference between Professional and Amateur. oh well at least they're trying.

Eh, I actually thought Firefly would be an awesome MMO but it would have to be something epic and immense.
Firefly never really got the chance to be epic. It was mostly a bunch of little stories. Even the movie is basically based off a minor bureaucratic blunder that modern governments would sweep under the carpet just as quickly.

I'm mostly disappointed b/c I'm a huge fan of the orginal series, and I'm sure that his MMO will be a horrible flop. People (network exects, mostly) might look at it and see it as proof that the franchise isn't marketable, and hence be less likely to resurrect it for new episodes. Even Joss Whedon has said that Firefly is done. After the movie did so poorly in the theaters, it's over.

Firefly and Serenity are fucking stupendous. Firefly, yes. Serenity, no. I'm sorry, the movie's plot was two dimensional, characters flat and devoid of personality, and frankly they could have cut 30 minutes out of it and it would've sufficed just fine. Had it been released for television, or direct-to-video, that would made for different consideration.
It was a relatively low budget film and it showed. That's certainly not saying I hate the show itself. I bought the entire series on DVD.

Why make a worthless, generic MMO out of a great sci-fi franchise? Why not make a good single-player game in which you could actually play as the characters from the series and have a plot? I wish Fox would give the rights for the show to the Sci-fi channel so they could continue the series.

MMOs are a bane to the world. If you play one, you need to kill yourself so that future generations of gamers will prosper.
Yeah, they look a lot like Tribes - not Tribes 2, the original Tribes. If I recall correctly, Dark Horizons used the Torque engine (poorly), which was used in T2. Regardless, I'd rather play either Tribes than any of those games or this Firefly MMO. This message was edited at Dec 8, 01:02. |

Firefly and Serenity are fucking stupendous. I love the idea of being a cowboy on the fringe of colonized space; it's so much more down-to-earth (no pun intended) than abstract, over-the-top renditions of near-future space travel which tend to overpopulate the entertainment world. Aside from that, however, Whedon's creation was a not-so-rousing success because of the masterfully designed and acted characters; not something translatable to a lifeless MMO.
The saving grace on this project would have to be in its handling of the colonized/anarch relations. Then reavers of course would further intensify the whole thing. If they can make it into an ongoing PVP-centric battle between outlaws and the alliance complete with robust capitol ships and planetary raiding/attacks, it could end up being a good game. In my opinion, then, reavers would serve as the neutral attack-everybody "race" that is completely NPC.
Transforming Joss Whedon's cult classic into a game is nothing short of a heavy undertaking. While hopes could rage into delusions of an MMO actually worth playing, the scales are weighted against any developer crazy enough to tackle such a mammoth undertaking. If you need any evidence of how difficult it is to turn something so grand and so beloved into a worth-playing product, take a look at the failure that is Galaxies.

You guys are stupid twats if you think there are only 4000 Firefly fans. The only reason Serenity was even made was the outcry of the fans when the show was canceled due to corporate politics.

i hope you viewed all the trailers available on that page... by the time you see Black Ice Tales you are either laughing or crying.
"Black Ice Tales", or, "Woman Jogging and Standing in a Field"
it isn't just that the graphics suck (and they do) it's the fact that none of the trailers tell you anytrhing about the game or how it plays. it's just cheesy techno music and people walking around in varied environments. now that's excitement.
