Vanguard to SOE

Sigil Games Online Announces that Sony Online Entertainment has signed a tentative agreement to be co-publisher for Vanguard: Saga of Heroes, Sigil's upcoming fantasy MMORPG (thanks Frans). The game was previously to be solely published by Microsoft Game Studios, but the change represents a homecoming for Brad McQuaid and Jeff Butler, as they helped develop the original EverQuest. Here is word on the agreement, which, again, is described as tentative:

“As the development process is ongoing and constantly shifting, it became clear that MGS and Sigil had varying visions and direction for the title’s development,” said Brad McQuaid, CEO of Sigil Games Online. “In the best interest of Vanguard, it was decided that we would buy back the publishing rights from Microsoft.”

As co-publisher of Vanguard: Saga of Heroes, Sigil assumes greater control of marketing and PR, while maintaining responsibility for game development, community relations, media relations, customer support, and quality assurance. Under the terms of the agreement, SOE will provide distribution, marketing, hosting and back-end support -- including billing and technical support -- for the game. Additionally, SOE is tentatively planning on adding Vanguard, upon its release,to SOE’s Station Access™ subscription plan. Station Access allows players to enjoy all of SOE’s MMO titles for one low monthly price.

There is no doubt in my mind that MS realised what a stinker they actually had on their hands and tried to influence the design to a more casual friendly bent.

Obviously this would go against THE VISION!!1111!!11

Ahhh the irony of this. Too hilarious.

The sound of a million MMO masochists jumping ship is rather musical dont you think?

Decided to stop and take a look at the screen shots they have for Vanguard. So I hit the site find the shots, start going through them. About the 5th shot in the website apparently goes down and all I get are time out errors.

Guess the Fates are trying to tell me something.

Can't see me paying almost 30cdn a month on this. Especially with SOE involved. Once they get there grubby fingers on your game, its just a matter of time b4 they kill it. Probly kill it b4 the release lmao. But the game has made up a huge following, hope it doe's well. But also hope it die's just to throw another nail in sony's coffin.

Playing MMORPGs has saved me from paying AU$90 a couple times a month for a standard run of the mill FPS or RPG that lasts bugger all time.

Very good point.

I'm currently trying out Seed. Very very buggy game. Reminds me of Eve but instead of mining they have repairing. Oh and point and click movement in a third person game that has an awful lot of narrow tunnels is about as bad as an interface can get.

Say what you will about World of Warcraft, but the game from level 1 to 60 was pretty fun. They had enough quests to keep it interesting. So if that's what you consider grind, then I can live with that level in an MMO.

My problem is after I hit 60, I really didn't find the EverQuest-style raid content that appealing.

But the days of 'EQ cloning' are over because the "grind mentality" is gone, for the most part.
If you want to try something different, try Auto Assault. It's definately NOT and EQ clone and I haven't felt like I'm grinding yet. As a MMORPG vet, I can say that this one is a "keeper" so far.

Yeah, a game where you have to grind to level 60 to do anything fun has really ended the grind days.

Oh, don't get me wrong... I'm no fan of WoW, either.

That's what I meant.

I'll probably pick it up and play for a couple of months, until something better comes along.

Playing MMORPGs has saved me from paying AU$90 a couple times a month for a standard run of the mill FPS or RPG that lasts bugger all time. And most MMORPGs will last me anything from 3-24 months (except DDO which didn't cut the mustard). Who cares if SOE takes it over? By the time they start churing out the expansions, it's time to move on ...

.... I'm sure there's a point in there somewhere. If you find one, let me know.

Everyone I know who was heavy into EQ is sick of that type of gaming and the next generation of MMO player is used to WoW style gameplay.
Please. WoW endgame is pretty much EQ3 - raid or quit.

WoW: Darsius (Earthen Ring) / GW: Denarr Trueblade / BF2: Slinky317 / CoH: Spectris (Justice)
WoW: Darsius (Earthen Ring) -- WAR: Darsius (Chaos Wastes) -- TF2 and CoD4 (and other random FPSes): Slink(FSU)

Microsoft would not dump a game this far into development if they thought they could recoup the investment.

Here's a quote from John Smedley, apparently the President of SOE:
I would only point out that Microsoft is about to get locked into a severely protracted battle with my compadres that make the PlayStation 3... and even though they are Microsoft, they have budgets. If the right deal comes along and they can get a return on a smart investment... well everything has a price..
Which is BS. For one, Sony has a much more limited budget. For another, if Microsoft is about to be "locked p in a very protracted battle" they're want to have sources of income coming in during that battle. Rather than have $1,000 now they'd prefer $100 a month for the next 3 years (very fudged numbers, obviously.)

If they thought there'd be any form of profit from this they'd hold onto it.

MMORPGs aren't my thing, I find them boring and repetitive. But I enjoy following the chaos around them. The last MMORPG that Sony picked up at the very end was The Matrix Online. Dumped just before release, Sony swooped in, game sucked and flopped.

Repeat?

You're right, Darkie. Having such a dated and irrelevent Sojourn clone relegated to the "also ran" hell of Sony's bargain bin MMOG channel Station Access like MxO was is definitely a good thing for the whole industry. Sigil is nothing but a genre dinosaur and seeing it slide into the La Brea tarpits of SOE is simply poetic justice.

Sigil wants to recapture the 'hardcore' EQ audience but it just isn't going to happen. Everyone I know who was heavy into EQ is sick of that type of gaming and the next generation of MMO player is used to WoW style gameplay.

Yeah, this is a good thing, for Brad's bank account. I think MS is ready to dump this like all the other MMOs they've gotten involved with.

Initial screens of the forests were impressive, but it's been downhill from there. It looks way too much like EQ2 now and initial reports from the beta say the game is a slideshow on normal computers. Having high system requirements seems like the worst move you can make to me, Blizzard was smart enough to see that and it paid off huge.

It's toast. No way any sane oldtimer MMO player is going to touch anything published by SOE. SOE is ran by beancounting idiots who understand ZERO about games (see: SWG, EQ2 and couple of other examples)
