Echoing PHJF to just get a great pair of headphones unless you're doing a lot of gaming with friends over.

If you must have speakers, get some nice bookshelf speakers and an amp.

I would second this. Though that is going to put it out of your budget. It is something you might want to consider saving up for. I highly doubt you will regret it.

Hey all,

Thanks for the replies! I'm actually surprised at the lack of solid middle range speakers. My old pair of middle range 5.1 speakers are in a word awesome. I think they out perform some higher end speakers. I'll see when or if I can get them back up here. They're currently in my parents' house on the other side of the country.

I'll look into seeing if I can't score a deal on Klipsch's ProMedia 2.1. I've looked into more expensive systems but some of the subwoofers are so massive and I'm hard up for space as it is! Headphones aren't an option since I use my PC as a media center as well as for gaming.

I'm looking at upping my price point and getting either Klipsch's ProMedia 2.1 speakers, or Logitech Z523 or even maybe Logitech Z623s. Thanks for the insight!
Be sure to listen to them in the local stores if you can!

Headphones don't give subwoofer bass to shake the whole room. ;)

I don't want bass that shakes the whole room, I'm not 20 anymore I would rather have accurate lows and great mids than "room shaking".
Heh. I still love bass. Shake me!!

I currently have a Logitech Z-2300 speakers (2.1 setup and analog). It's decent, but not good as my former Klipsch ProMedia v.2-400 (its subwoofer's bass stopped working with lots of rattlings). My onboard audio suck and don't give enough bass like my SB Audigy 2ZS PCI sound card.

What you want basically doesn't exist anymore. You can buy a handful of proper 2.1 speakers but they will run hundreds of dollars.

The only modern 2.1 PC speaker out there is the Corsair SP2500 and it runs ~$225 (the cheaper SP2200 model was defective and isn't sold anymore).

Just use 5.1 speakers with only the 2.1 units if you have to, or use headphones. There are a million and one great headphones available.

Hey all,

I moved into a new apartment and I don't have a good space layout for my old 5.1 speaker system. SO I bought a pair of cheap but decent Logitech S-220 speakers. They sound fine but I'm thinking about getting a better system. My budget is around $50 to $70 USD. Any suggestions?
What about used Klipsch's ProMedia 2.1 Speaker System (3-Piece)?
