Ok, after deciding that I have no skill left at MI2 (seriously, some of these puzzles are far too arbitrary for me to ever figure them out now, but I remember playing this as a kid...) and after deciding I had zero interest in FC2 (all I did was the tutorial, I guess, but it told me to meet the weapon's dealer, when it actually wanted me to just use the weapon's computer, and figuring out I had to waste a diamond on that took me like an hour of waiting around. Up until that point I'd been involved in zero entertaining combat so I never felt compelled to return) I've gone back and reinstalled X-COM.

Using the Steam FAQs I turned the sound back to the original (I purchased the Win95 version of X-COM years ago and had been playing that, so I was used to the lesser sounds), I got rid of the sound lag, etc. I then used XCOMUTIL for the first time, but only threw half of those ideas in (but now I can play a harder game!)

I'm loving it. Still have a billion ideas for improvements, and really wish someone would remake this but let us more closely monitor our units - eg give us a list of every mission they've done, how they did, let us see their changes over time, and let us continue to view their stuff after they die (too often I find myself loading up old games just to recall who that corpse is.)

I used to rename guys and use soldier.exe to bring them back to life when they died, often giving them 50-100 days of injury as a penalty, but I'm doing this first run-through vanilla, meaning I use the time-honored tradition of pairing two great guys with a rookie so that he turns every corner first. If he survives three or so missions he's probably no longer worthless. There's still the everpresent problem, though, of the first guy off the SkyRanger becoming your best guy if he survives a few missions but being unlikely to make it very far, haha.

That is, of course, assuming you like turn based tactical gameplay.

Yes, but I'm also very particular about it.
I've played X-COM and JA/JA2 about a billion times each, but hated most other attempts at it.

Frozen Synapse

I find my refusal to buy this hysterical.
It's 2 for $24.95, which means its value is $12.50. I won't buy it for twice that. Yes, I get two copies, but I have no one to share it with so it's meaningless.

If it was 1 for $19.99 and 2 for $24.95 I'd probably be ok. That $5 barely means anything to me, anyway, but something about having to pay the exact same price for 2 even though I'll only use one strikes me as insane. Bad, bad pricing idea.

As I understand it, the game was always targeted at that price point. The developers simply decided to include an extra copy to help grow the fan base, so assuming it's $25 for two copies is inaccurate--at least as far as their intentions go.

A single copy is worth $25 easily, anyway. That is, of course, assuming you like turn based tactical gameplay.

I highly recommend Super Meat Boy, especially for short gaming sessions. It's a platformer at it's finest (and hardest). This game pretty much requires a gamepad, I wouldn't even try with a keyboard setup.

After that, I'd say Titan Quest: Immortal Throne. Immortal Throne is an addition to the base game; starting on Immortal Throne will allow you to play through TQ with all of the classes and then continue into the Immortal Throne storyline. Be certain to grab the fanpatch for TQ before you play, though.

I'd actually fired up TQ recently, trying to scratch a hack-n-slash itch I've had. Instead I've wasted most of today playing with the Din's Curse demo in between matches of Frozen Synapse. I don't even want to look at how long my unplayed list is...

If I remember right the hub in Psychonauts is the summer camp. There you can collect respawning items, talk to characters, and enter the levels (throwing a door on the back of the head of a character).

I never replayed the game and I think it speaks volumes about the originality when I can remember almost every level. The crazy gravity defiant milk man world ("I am the milkman, my milk is delicious"). The artsy spanish/picaso/bullfighting world with playing cards. The fish world where you are a giant monster attacking little fishy towns.

FarCry 2 I had more fun collecting the diamonds than doing anything else. I'm a sucker for hidden items, even if they are marked on radar.

I thought there was some sort of a "zip" in Monkey Island 2?

I started Psychonauts twice on the Xbox but it never really stuck with me. Never made it terribly far, but the platforming wasn't doing it for me and I never felt like I had a feel for how thw world was laid out, if it was at all.

I actually went with a combination of Far Cry 2 (which I'm already finding annoying just knowing the complaints people here had about malaria, respawning and friendlies shooting), and Monkey Island 2 (which I made it to the end but never finished back in 1993 or 1994 as the family 170MB HDD was full and my parents were demanding I install some college application software for my sister who would go on to never use it. MI2 was the largest program at 11MB and had to go.) I'm finding it irritating to watch Guybrush walk so damn much. Funny, actually, but seeing him walk from one side of an area I want to exit to "path," or seeing him walk the twisting, turning path to Captain Dread's houseboat when NOTHING else is in that screen is infuriating to me. Worse is the audio commentary mocking Ron Gilbert for his insistence upon the game being 40 hours even if it meant having to waste time crisscrossing islands. You succeeded, Ron! As a kid this didn't bug me, but right now I find it drastically limiting my play time.

Psychonauts and Evil Genius

Despite not really being a fan of platformers or console style adventure games Psychonauts really grabbed me with the writing and level design.

Evil Genius was fun if you're into that style of game, unfortunately I never played Dungeon Keeper so I can't compare it to that. But I am a fan of games like The Movies, Gangsters, and The Sims to a degree. Build a lair with minions and traps etc.

Psychonauts is definetly worth a revisit but I'm not sure how well Evil Genius has held up over the years.
