Well that sentiment is certainly true, but 9/11 is not the largest thread ever here, it was one about the Obamacare website (879 comments). This is followed by the Elite: Dangerous thread, my mom's death, 9/11, and the release of Half-Life 2, which are all the threads with over 500 comments.

I'm not sure, but I think that the record for the longest thread was the 9/11 thread, sadly.
Also, at 814 comments, that one E:D thread has already beaten any single SC thread I know about. It helps when you ship a game.
