I just wanted to bump this, 5 years later.
Just saw someone started a similar thread in 2018.

Was that spam? Damn, I received an alert that this topic was updated and was thinking that finally BN offered a new look working on all platform.

Yeah, one of those generic replies with a signature to spam a site URL.

What about my idea of using WordPress?

The possibility of using a generic CMS for a mobile site is not out of the question. But this carries a lot of complications, and will probably require me finding a resource to trust to help with this beyond Frans, as he probably won't have the bandwidth to help make this happen.

There is a fledgling effort to look at the CSS here and make the site's default display look better on smartphones, as well, but all of this is fits and starts.

Basically, we have a couple of decades of spaghetti code here, and it is more than a little daunting trying to find a way out of this box.

Ha that is recent and I missed it... sometimes I skip reading Out of the Blue.

Obviously not, unless you can point out exactly how?

Well... Chrome have a great emulator built-in, there it is in action showing how BN looks like on a mobile phone.

I think adding a viewport meta tag should help, have a read at https://developer.chrome.com/multidevice/webview/pixelperfect

That exists, but is an alias for wap.bluesnews.com, which dates back to the pre-smartphone era.

Had you taken a look at the Credits page, you'd know it's essentially one, Blue.

I believe the really first steps though would be to post this as a news on the main page, maybe in the 'etc.' or 'Out of the Blue' section or something so more people would see it and more chance that someone kindly offer you some help. That would be a good start.

That's how I've planned on dealing with this when I was prepared to bring it up... I posted here and now because of your post.

You need to make that a bluesnews related news post then ;p Sadly I can't help.. but a proper m.bluesnews.com would be much appreciated. Site is sadly unbrowsable on my android tablet. Looks like that screenshot, really.

I don't know how many you are behind the scene... from your post it looks like no one has lot of knowledge of CSS, I would guess you have similar skills as me so while I was to propose to look at responsive design and the use of CSS media queries now I think the learning curve could be long and frustrating.

What about a KickStarter campaign to collect 1000$ to hire a pro and get it done? I have no idea of the revenu you collect with the ads ans such but asking for a small 1000$ should make it possible to succeed the campaign, and should be a big enough amount for a few hours to a pro to look into this.

Of course, maybe someone in the BN's audience will be able to help for free and get credited somewhere on the site too.

Really? That's strange, it's the opposite from what we see on the computer where titles are bigger than articles.

Maybe they should think of a m.bluesnews.com? But again, after all those years, I look like the only one who care.

No you aren't... just a matter of manpower. This should all get a more dedicated effort at some point, but in the meantine, my more superficial attempts at getting the headline tags to behave on mobile displays has met with a little frustration. I'll take another look at this, and anyone with any expertise to share can feel free to offer suggestions.

BN display on mobile Nov 11, 2014, 08:18

Hi,

Emailed BN but no answer yet. Was wondering if BN show like this for everyone on smartphone. I find it strange that the titles are so tiny. This is using Chrome on Android KitKat. I checked the little box to view as a computer but the presentation was the same.

While it's the first time I'm using a smartphone to visit BN, some have been visiting BN on smartphone for years already so if it was a problem with CSS it would have been reported and fixed a long time ago, no?

Regards
