Champions Online Open Beta Correction

A post on the Champions Online Forums by a member of the Online Community Team for Cryptic's upcoming MMORPG indicates that yesterday's indications on VG247 that open beta testing for Champions Online will begin on August 17 is subject to change (actually "most likely going to change"), nor is the accompanying information about changes to the beta level cap accurate (thanks Shacknews). Word is:
These dates are by no means finalized, and are working dates that are most likely going to change. I'm not sure why this information was posted, but we will post the dates for things like Open Beta as we set them.

Additionally, the "level cap" in that article is incorrect. There is currently no level cap for characters in the beta. (Besides hitting the maximum level of 40, that is.)

" The game is WoW in tights"

That would imply that the game has depth.. and so far, i see NO depth at all from C.O.

The game appears to me to be "spend hours designing your character... err.. and then.. kill someone.. but man.. check out our character designer!!"

So, wth. Is the open beta date going to be earlier, giving more than 2 weeks of open beta before launch, or is it going to be later...giving less than 2 weeks of open beta before launch?

Let's face facts here...it's already July 9th, so if open beta happened right now, they're looking at just short of 2 months of open beta. To me, that doesn't seem like nearly enough time for an MMO.

Yeah, releasing missions weekly.

And I agree, yes, that's what they get paid for. When I played CoH it was before the whole "create your missions" thing. I'm not saying it's easy, like, everyone and their mother could whip out a mission in fifteen minutes. But, experienced developers should be able to produce something in a timely manner. Maybe they need to make games more modular?

i don't see how you guys place any faith in an open beta. look at age of conan... it had a beta, they had the player feedback and they still released pre-alpha software in the retail box. apparently, and arguably, it has only recently become worthy of a retail release, over a year after launch. a beta is useless if the developer doesn't actually care about the feedback from the testers, which is almost the norm now right?

You have been warned, and no the beta has not been great.

The entire experience has been awful

Actually Closed Beta has been great for Champions Online. You have quite a few vet City of Heroes players that are VERY dedicated to working on issues the dev's ask for feedback for and have been great for tweaking of powers/stats/builds/overpowered builds etc.
You just wouldn't get that sorta quality if ya had 5000+ people in the beta yet.

Those missions are harder to plan and polish than you can imagine

And that's part of the reason you pay a monthly fee and they draw a salary...that's their job.

And yeah, the hype meter for CO is totally underwhelming at this point. They need a few solid weeks of OB at least.

Are you talking about "weekly" as in the devs release a new set of "storyline missions" weekly? or that you can only play a set of storyline missions once in a week?

Hey, I have a suggestion. Subscribe to CoH for a month and make a new 5 mission story arc every week. See how much work it is before you ask "is it so hard?"

After that, let's have a discussion about what "quality" means.

Edit: no malice intended, just a challenge. Those missions are harder to plan and polish than you can imagine.

It's the only MMO I care about(albeit not a whole lot). I'm waiting for the open beta to see if it's worth sinking my free time(what little there is) into. Tried CoH and it was pretty meh. I hate games that "force" me to bring along a friend. Is it so hard to ask for weekly multiplayer-optional storyline-driven missions?

The only companies that have shied away from open betas are for projects they don't have faith in or have something to hide. This is certain to follow in the parade of disappointment kicked off by AoC and WAR...when will the subpar MMO drought end?

Cryptic is such a bunch of pussies. This game needs an open beta more than anything, because NO ONE CARES. Just open it up for the love of God and get it over with
