BioWare on Casual/Mature Games

BioWare: Mature industry can drop violence from games is a quote from this morning's BioWare interview. It seems they are not talking about hardcore gamers here, it sounds more like they are talking about expanding to a more casual audience. Specifically Dr. Greg says: "I think once we've got the breadth of audience available to us, there could be really good opportunities created by different people coming to games that are story-driven."

I think hardcore means any game that involves more than "Run towards enemy. Mash A until QT-cinematic starts. Press A again. Watch cinematic of guy dying. Repeat."

You remember back in the late 90s, early 2000s when games had plots and puzzles and quests and sometimes they required you to read and moral choices were more than "DEVOUR THE SOULS OF THE CHILDREN / Draw a picture of a puppy!"

That's RPGs, of course. A 'hardcore' platformer would be one that requires you to play through a level a few times before you beat it, making you actually learn the game. I've never been good at platformers, but you never enter 'flow' with a game that has no penalty for getting hit or botching a jump. It's pretty awesome when you hit that state where you just seem to breeze smoothly between bullets without getting a scratch.
