GamesRadar - Are expansions ruining World of Warcraft?
So how could more content possibly be a bad thing? Well, most complaints we’ve heard seem to stem from the general way MMO expansions tend to funnel a majority of the population into its new areas, rendering old content obsolete. For example, The Burning Crusade provided players with a new level cap of 70, and introduced Outland, giving level 60-plus players a new – but comparatively smaller set of zones to play in. A mass exodus to Outland was partially balanced by the addition of two new races and classes for both Horde and Alliance players. Since both factions had brand new options for starting a new level one Paladin (for the Horde) or a Shaman (for the Alliance), there seemed to be a healthy amount of players to group with on the way to level 60 in “classic” WoW when TBC released.

No thats not the problem. The problem is each expansion is mostly just more of the same. I've run into perhaps a dozen former WoW players I know IRL and used to play WoW with. Every last one of them left after the last expansion, (as I did,) because the content was just more of the same old garbage quests and linear advancement from 70-80.

Oh, I got another Fireball spell at level 78, which is identical to the one I got at level 2. I'm bored.

Oh I got a quest to kill 10 boars, which are basically the same boars I was killing at level 1 accept for the skin texture.

After a while you start to feel like you simply have done it all before. Give me the variety of older more sandboxy MMOGs. Like Anarchy Online where the 'mage' class had a dozen spells to choose from at each level range (1-10, 11-20, etc.. up to level 210!) that got consistantly more and more powerful not just in damage, but in the graphic fx, even the sound fx.

Give me more than crafting that does more than diddly squat for anyone but my character, save the 3 hard to make items that other players 'kinda' would like, unless your an enchanter or scribe. Only to make them I've got about 10 hours of farming to look forward to.. YAY.

and last, dammit give me an interesting sandbox world to explore and missions to complete, good crafting, fun social systems, extreme varieties of content that can keep you busy for weeks at and, and all the while you never gain a level and don't really care because thats not what it's ALL about... instead of simply another f'ing 'go kill 10 xxx' and lead-by-the-hand content!
