3D Realms Closing?

3D Realms is shutting down according to a report on Shacknews that's confirmed by a post on the 3D Realms Forums by Joe Siegler, who says: "It's not a marketing thing. It's true. I have nothing further to say at this time." 3D Realms has been otherwise silent on this topic so far, but publisher Deep Silver and newly formed Apogee are unaffected by the news, as they say: "Deep Silver and Apogee Software are not affected by the situation at 3D Realms. Development on the Duke Nukem Trilogy is continuing as planned." According to Shack the closure is due to funding issues, and they have a statement from Take Two who claim to still own publishing rights to Duke Nukem Forever, but that they have not been funding development of 3D Realms' flagship game.

1) this is the death of a major part of pc gaming history. They've been funny but they've never done harm. I see no reason to dance on this grave.

2) how is "when its done" and info blackouts teases? Aren't they the opposite? Warped.

3) id used "when it's done" long before dnf.

4) people actually believe dennis dyack? Wow.

5) alright, so if crazy theories are true and dnf was a marketing scheme what has 3dr been doing? Why no other games? And di those of you buying this think epic organized 9/11 and the moon landing ws faked using the ue2 engine?

Again, sorry. My blackberry struggles with typing here. Leads to typos.

Space,

Prey was originally designed and developed alongside Unreal as a competitor. I believe the primary programmer on the project had a brain aneurysm and died, so the project was shelved for a period. The prey today is a totally different product from what was presented long ago, with the only similarity being the Portal technology.

I didn't fact check, this is straight from memory, but I am pretty sure it's moderately accurate.

STEAM has about 700 thousand to 1 million members.

Steam has more than 15 million accounts last time I checked the statistics page. Only a fraction of that seems to be active though.

I hope one of the former employees decides to write a book about the development. That would probably be an interesting read.

You would think that after it became clear that their development wasn't keeping up with technology they would have just buckled down and finished it up in a couple years like every other developer seems to be able to.

Incidentally, so far as I can recall 3D Realms was the first company to prominently use the phrase "When it's done" in regards to their release dates I believe this goes back to Duke3D, which suffered a similar though not nearly as ridiculous development cycle. Can anyone else who remembers confirm that?

3DRealms needs a buyer. Ok fine times are tough people and bills need to get paid. They should have no problems finding one. The new Duke Nukem game(s) are/is "continuing as planned". But what about Prey 2? Hmmmm...

Also, 3DRealms has STEAM and Impulse as major candidates for digital PC distribution which would cost 3DRealms next to nothing. Impulse has over 1 million members. STEAM has about 700 thousand to 1 million members.

A limited collectors edition for the PC would be nice also

Nothing more than a marketing ploy albeit an odd one. In the bigger picture it will all make sense. The news was even on the BBC UK site which is odd but again, make sense if 3DRealms is looking for a new owner. The UK has many outstanding and successful game studios.

But what's important is ideas. 3DRealms needs new games and with a new owner they just may get the funds they need to make those ideas a reality.

The continued support from the community and fans is important. You can see by all the comments in here. Many have been in the 3DRealms forums for 7-10 years. Never give up the fight. Sometimes change is a good thing. We love our Duke Nukem as do millions of fans around the world. I'm sure when the game(s) are done they will be worth the wait.

If this is true... it seems DNF was a marketing ploy all along.

(Long read from ex 3DRealms developer)

http://gamingisstupid.com/2009/05/06/the-chair-story-revival/

He BOLDS the word "Story" so I don't know what to make of it, but it's most likely fake. The funny thing is that the "marketing scheme" part is believable but the crazyness with the chair isn't. Since this is a re-post, it's probably already been determined as a fake... but I never saw it before.

It can't be true. Read the last part.

The first Duke Nukem game was titled Duke Nukem, but Apogee learned that this name might have already been trademarked, so they changed it to Duke Nukum for the 2.0 revision[2]. The name was later discovered not to be trademarked, so the spelling Duke Nukem was restored for Duke Nukem II and all successive Duke games. The trademark in question was the Duke Nukem character in Captain Planet and the Planeteers.

The Captain Planet series was developed and co-produced by Turner Program Services and DiC Entertainment and ran new episodes from September 10, 1990 until December 5, 1992.

Duke Nukem first appeared as the title character of the Apogee platform game Duke Nukem, which was published in 1991.

But given the fact that 3Drealms "worked" on Duke3d for 13 years and then just collapsed, the idea that it was all just a marketing ploy ... really isn't that far-fetched.
It is too far-fetched when you read and look at the whole story. Epic doesn't even need to be involved if it is just a marketing ploy. Duke Nuke'm does nothing for Epic when it already had real games that had shipped with its engine plus more in development from other licensees. Plus, the idea of a contract to ensure this ploy is even more ridiculous when you consider that Charlie was just an employee of 3D Realms not a principal in the company. He doesn't even need to be told that it's a ploy in the first place. And, if it is a ploy 3D Realms doesn't need him or anyone else to work on a faux game. Now the part about the chair isn't nearly as far-fetched in comparison when you look at the players involved and the backdrop. I can certainly see Mark, George, and CliffyB hazing Charlie in the God Games trailers at E3 after a few too many beers.

The only part of the story which is likely true is that 3D Realms held a meeting at E3 in 2001 to brainstorm ideas and get some feedback for DNF after the release of the trailer for the game. The rest is just sensationalistic bullshit to provide a backstory for some photographs.

No, he has it right and I think you got it backwards. I gave that story the benefit of the doubt until the narrator was threatened with a sharp piece of wood unless he signed the contract ... that was too over the top.

But given the fact that 3Drealms "worked" on Duke3d for 13 years and then just collapsed, the idea that it was all just a marketing ploy ... really isn't that far-fetched.

You have to admit - 3D Realms had to have been an amazingly strong company to begin with. Most companies would have failed long before 13 years of the utter incompetence, negligence, and stupidity present there.

Damn - I was hoping DNF would make it to 15 years of development. Still it's one helluva record...
