Fallout 3 Broken Steel PC Broken

Bethesda Game Studios Forums have word that the PC edition of the Broken Steel add-on for Fallout 3 is suffering a problematic launch on Games for Windows (thanks Eurogamer). Attempting to install the DLC results in a "not a cryptographic message" error, and there is speculation that the size of the download is not correct. Update: Word from Bethesda is this is a GFW DRM error: "We're seeing the same error, which is a Games for Windows Live DRM install error. Microsoft is working on fixing it, and we'll let everyone know once we've verified it."

You know, at first I was pretty disappointed that the DLC isn't available for PS3. Not so much anymore since it's barely available for PC and 360.

GFWL is crap. End of story. Dont even try comparing it to Steam Verno because Steam doesnt throw shitloads of money at developers to turn their games into shovelware. I have never had anything but problems with games that use GFWL.

Someone else made the comparison, I was just responding. Steam was largely shit for a long time and the community hated it. Even now it has it's share of problems. GfWL could be good in a few years but not if they keep having these sorts of problems. Try having more of an open mind and not be such a massive dong in future posts TIA.

O yeah. Forgot about the new feature of not being able to alt+tab anymore that was added in the what... 1.2 patch?

In the game from the beginning, it's my biggest complaint with Fallout3. It's not that you CANT alt tab, its that its very very inconsistent. Sometimes it will just crash the game and other times you can do it no problem. It's frustrating when trying to dig up some online info for the more esoteric sections of the game.

Growing pains is no excuse, it was an excuse for Steam since they were the first, but for fucks sake this is 2009 and we are talking about Microsoft here right?

Fuck GFWL!

VATS with FSAA on causes insane drop in FPS

Actually I don't think that's an FPS thing, it's that the actual VATS calculations take a second to appear if you have FSAA turned on for some reason. It's not terrible annoying as most of the time I spend that one second deciding which limb to hit anyways. I think the alt-tab crash problems are decidely more obnoxious and would be a bigger priority to fix.

Wow. No surprise there. Like others have already stated every single DLC has had MAJOR issues.

Granted a LARGE chunk of the problems were relating to GfWL but there have been other serious issues on Bethesda's side. Hell there were serious issues with the game from launch day with this game that have yet to be truly addressed (VATS with FSAA on causes insane drop in FPS).

GfWL has been a complete clusterfuck for this game and it is completely un-needed being a offline game. Things could have just been released by some other DL method.

Apparently the 1.5 patch also introduced some serious issues into the game as well.

Can they give up on this stupid shit now and just go to Steam?

Like that will magically fix everything. Steam has like one guy assigned to patch conversion and validation, it's pretty pathetic. Some games get updated magically fast and other games take weeks or months and have tons of problems. I like Steam as much as the next guy but it's really inconsistent.

One can only hope, but I'm sure GFFW has some sort of exclusivity window

No it doesn't.

GfWL isn't half as terrible as people make it out to be but unfortunately it's like the early Steam release - huge negative stigma attached to it in the community. I don't mind the implementation and UI personally, hell it's a lot more eye pleasing than Steam. The problem as usual with this stuff is the whole off-line/online profiles and DLC lockdown garbage.

This looks more like a GFWL distribution problem. The files being used for distribution are corrupted. It also shows all that extra time used to validate a GFW game is wasted if they can't catch a show stopping install bug. That's too bad, because GFWL never got in my way like steam had in the past, but with problems like that MS isn't going anywhere with this.

I went through The Pitt yesterday, it was worth $10 imho. I think Bethesda has had their share of problems with DLC but mostly I suspect it's related to GfWL. Whenever I manually extract the files and just load them as regular .BSA files I never have issues.

This is bloody ridiculous. Every single DLC for this game has had problems (though this one seems to be only on the PC side, the 360 had problems with the other two) and the other night, I couldn't use GFW Live with the game at all because GFW was saying that the new 1.5 patch was available for download before they actually put the file on the servers so the download would fail. How hard is it to test these things before you upload them?! No other company but Bethesda had had problems like this.

Does this surprise anyone? So far all three of these DLC's have had "major launch issues". I'll wait till they are all on one DVD. However PC Gamer gave "The Pitt" 83% and said it was a worthy add on. It was reviewed however by Dan Stapleton a HUGE Fallout fan.

Wait, I thought someone here was claiming that Bethesda games were so polished and bug free?
