Out of the Blue

After suffering from holes in our backyard a few years ago that turned out to be from skunks, we have started finding new holes in the lawn. These are smaller than the skunk holes, and we are at a loss figuring out what could be the cause. The skunk-holes had these little piles of dirt around them cluing us into the digging involved, but these look as though someone has been poking the ground with something a little fatter than a pencil. Weird.

You think? I have a hard time believing that... there are a lot of holes out there considering I've never seen a snake in this area in over eight years now.

You can only hope.

Then you can go out in the middle of the night and scream
"I am tired of these mother fucking snakes in my mother fucking lawn!"

It's fortunate that Blue loves coffee so much. Wet coffee grounds will do the trick nicely. Start fertilizing the lawn - particularly around the holes - with wet coffee grounds. Insects hate them and they're safe for Huddy and the Gunnar-man.

Probably ants. You might want to be alert for ants in or near your house and get some poison. Beware, the poison is very bad for dogs so if you do spray/throw it around, you'll need to keep your pups out of the backyard for awhile, probably until next time it rains.

Here's a good way to test if it's ants though. Get a hose, start spraying in one of the holes. They should come crawling it fairly damn soon, as they really don't like having their colony flood.

I managed to get rid of an ant colony almost underneath my house that way, I put the high pressure hose on it, and after three minutes the freaking queen came crawling out. Killed her, voila, ant problem gone.

But that was probably more luck than anything.

I used to live in the Pocono mountains in Pennsylvania. Your description sounds exactly like ground wasps. If so, be very careful. They make Africanized Honey Bees seem tame by comparison.

Some kind of insect like maybe a bee or wasp?

That sounds like it could explain it.

If so, is your lawn on the dry side right now?

Yes, I would say it was.

I was going to say that it sounds like your neighbor aerated your lawn for you.

I think chipmunks don't burrow, but use existing holes (like drain pipes)...

I like the first posters' idea about ground wasps and bees.

Good luck!

Moles maybe? Although typically they also leave small mounds dirt arround them. (Depends on the type of soil)
