Out of the Blue

An interesting thing I learned from my new G9 mouse with the weights is how unnecessary weights are in a mouse, for myself, at least. I assumed at first that heavy would be better, but quickly found loading it with weight actually caused me wrist and hand pain, and further experimentation proved that I was happiest with no weights whatsoever, so maybe I need to look into filling this thing with helium.

You guys don't know what the weight are for and you don't use them??

And you call yourself gamers lol.

Probably don't use setpoint either.

I put them in my left show when I play....seems to make a difference....like those magnetic bracelets.

I have a G5. I tend to "lift" mice whenever I use them. After I put the weights in it kept the lifting to a minimum. My wrist and hand doesn't hurt either.

For me it was all in the Mouse pad

Mouse pads always just got in my way. If I ever have to use a mouse with a mousepad, I usually just throw the pad to the side so the stupid mouse doesn't keep sliding off the edge or getting stuck on it. I don't have a problem being accurate with my Trackman.

I used to use the Logitech Marble+ and ran with a Trackball for years. Used to swear by them. Then found I was actually more accurate and my wrists did better during marathon gaming sessions with a mouse, and switched back.

For me it was all in the Mouse pad, compared to a standard Pad or no pad the trackball had all the pros. When I started using a RatPad (the hard textured plastic) The Mouse was far superior in accuracy, and comfort.

I now use a G5 with I think 2 light and 1 heavy weight, and couldn't be happier. Having the adjustable sensitivity is great, and I find the extra weight in the mouse actually helps me with finer movements, where without weights the mouse wanted to fly across the desk.

I picked up one of the super fancy Microsoft Sidewinder mice, and it uses weights as well.
Fact is though, the only use the weights have, is sitting in the box, because they hold it down and the box lets you weave the cord through it.
The cool part to me was the extra pads. However, despite having a choice in the matter, I still only use one set.

I had actually never heard of those things. To be honest, the Falcon looks really stupid. So instead of resting my arm on my desk and moving a mouse with my hand in a semi-comfortable position, I have to turn my hand into a claw to grab something that's essentially floating half a foot above the table?

Yeah, that won't cause RSI at all...

Motion sense is where we need to go. I've been waiting ten years to just point at something on my screen without actually TOUCHING my screen, and then dragging it somewhere, or clicking a button, etc.

Only problem I'd see with that is that your hand is constantly in front of your face and for the first couple of weeks you'd get tired very quickly.

I use 11.3 grams of weight in my G5 (4 1.7s on each corner and a 4.5 in the middle) and I love it. I've experimented with weights and no weights and various speeds, and I've found this works best for me - higher refresh rate and weight vs. lower speed and no weight. When I've tried higher speeds without the weights I spaz out. I've tried all manner of variation of weights and speeds with this mouse and found my personal sweet spot.

I personally don't understand trackballs, or how anyone feels they can give you a competitive advantage in an online FPS. To each their own I suppose. Personally, I'm down with my weights and selectable speeds. It takes experimenting, but it can be better, at least for some of us.

Just don't forget what Europe sang in their biggest hit...so far....

Were leaving together,
But still its farewell
And maybe well come back,
To earth, who can tell?
I guess there is no one to blame
We're leaving ground
Will things ever be the same again?

Its the final countdown...

started using a Logitech Marble+ years ago and I haven't gone back to mice since. I have replaced my old one recently with a Logitech Trackman Wheel, and it's even better!

I've used the wheel versions for over 10 years now and love em. Just finally switched to a wireless one in the last 6 months or so...

Can't imagine ever going back to a mouse...

I don't understand why people still use mice

I used a trackball for awhile, but it just intensifies my RSI problems because my range of motion becomes even more limited. At least with a mouse I can temporarily change my grip and the posture of my hand if I feel muscles begin to ache.

With a trackball, you're pretty much stuck with your thumb stretched out.

That's just my personal reason, no idea why other people use a mouse rather than a trackball.

For that matter, why hasn't anyone invented something else yet?

I don't understand why people still use mice. I mean really. Why pick up and move and pick up and move all the damn time? That gets so tiring. I started using a Logitech Marble+ years ago and I haven't gone back to mice since. I have replaced my old one recently with a Logitech Trackman Wheel, and it's even better! You have no idea how ridiculously easy it is to dominate in TF2 with this thing, when all I have to do is move my thumb. Plus I can spin it for extra fast movement if I need to, but usually, my sensitivity is high enough anyway. Also, cleaning it is a snap. I don't have any of that annoying gunk to clean off of rollers like on a mouse. It's just three tiny contact points.

I really wish Logitech would invest more time into updating these things though as it would be nice to have a higher DPI gaming version. This does me just fine for the moment however. I recommend you all check one out. Once you get past the learning curve, I swear to god it's the best trackball (or mouse for that matter) that you'll ever use.

same here, as far as mouse motion goes, I can use my entire desktop or do all my gaming by basicaly just shifting the mouse underneath my palm, Inow I hardly move the arm\wrist at all, no movement, no stress never had a repetitive stress problem either. (except when playing consoles that is, I tend to press the buttons a little too hard.)

Nice heh. I think after a few weeks of lint collection I'd have taped the hole shut or something, no matter what it did to smooth movements on a desktop. The dirt mice collect is pretty nasty sometimes. Too bad one can't just boil the whole mouse to clean it like one could with mouse balls back in the day.
Huh? I'm sorry, I was thinking about cake.

Does anyone actually put the weights in? I don't use the weights in my G5. I thought it was just a gimmicky selling point since the Logitech G5 (wired) and the G7 (wireless) share the same body, they needed something to fill the space of the battery compartment on the wired G5.

I wish they would have found a way to seal the hole. After ~2 years of gaming with it, the scroll wheel quit working. I took it apart and the thing was full of lint and stuff that made its way in through that hole. The mouse wheel was caked with so much stuff it was blocking the optical sensor that detects its movement. I cleaned it all out, and it's like a new mouse again. It brought back memories of practically weekly cleanings when I used to use a ball mouse.

Bah, who needs huge sweeping motions? Years of desks too small for gaming have honed the reflexes needed to use ridiculously high sensitivity settings in first-person shooters. If I move an inch I do a 360! It's really fun to watch people play stuff on my computer.

100% agree. Mouse weights just seem like another gimmick. I think that I move my mouse around in probably a 1 square inch area most of the time. I don't see how adding weight could possibly affect my "performance" in that small of an area.

However, maybe there are folks that mouse in huge, sweeping motions, and weights might make a difference there. Who knows...
