BF2/2142 Map Plans

The Battlefield Franchise Portal has details on Operation Blue Pearl, a new map to be included in future patches for both Battlefield 2 and Battlefield 2142. The article gives insight into their design principles, as they must use fog to limit draw distances to serve lower-spec machines, even though many gamers have more powerful machines than were available when each installment in the military shooter series was released. They also describe efforts at making use of some less-familiar elements as they re-use objects from the original games. They also explain the purpose of a new map: "We here at DICE also felt that BF2 lacked a map with a beach landing scenario – like 'Omaha Beach' in BF 1942. That’s why we’ve made this map into a beach landing and hopefully you guys will enjoy that experience." They say they are eager for feedback from beta testing, but do not specify when testing will begin.

Okay let me qualify what I mean by polished for Red Orchestra (RO). BF2 **still** has dolphin diving where people see you, dive to the ground and have great weapon accuracy as they do so and are very difficult to hit during that animation. RO seems to completely remove that with a nice prone, crouch and stand system that doesn't seem to be exploited.

It has a nice voice commands system akin to bf1942 where you can do things like "help needed" "help needed at" "ammo needed" "request sniper" "MG suppert needed" "need AT rifle" "request demolition" "request tank" "request artillery" "request transport" "yes sirt" "negative" "thanks" "apologize" "infantry spotted" "MG position" and a lot more..

Compare that with COD4 or FEAR2. LOL. Then there are nice touches like only being able to reload the MG while it is deployed. Also you can clearly see what weapons players are carrying on their backs even while they are not wielding them. Also there are not only weapon drops on deaths, but ammo and grenades too. Also from what I've seen so far, the maps are well designed and the textures are really nice. They aren't tiny COD4 maps that a five year old could memorize in 3 minutes.

The graphical performance is outstanding too. I can play at over 60fps in 1920x1200 with 8xAA and 16xAF at the highest quality settings on my ATI 4870/512MB and my CPU utilization is only about 50% on both cores. Also the game loads fast the menus are very responsive (unlike UT3 or BF2) and there is a lot of configurability in the game. The UI is good. It allows binding mouse4 and mouse5 which can't be said for all FPS games of late:).

Also, there is a very good spectating system in RO. Even better than UT3's which is good.

That's some of why I say the game is polished.
