Slate Magazine - Should the United
States ban a Japanese "rape simulator" game?
"Considering the impossibility of policing the Internet, as well as the
availability of English RapeLay translations and forums for years before any
politician caught wind of the game, it's unrealistic to think that the game
could be banished from America. Very few Japanese developers make an effort
to sell eroge to the West, and those that do, like Peach Princess and
G-Collections, make content modifications to suit foreign norms and laws.
(For example, all underage characters' ages get rounded up to 18, no matter
how young the character looks.) These Westernized versions are sold in the
United States via import sites like J-List and Play-Asia. Neither company
sells RapeLay, but they do offer the popular eroge Yume Miru Kusuri. That
game, while more edgy than it is violent, does focus on sex-crazed,
underage-looking high schoolers with drug problems and suicide fetishes.
RapeLay is appalling, but titles like Yume Miru Kusuri—sold in America after
being unconvincingly modified so the protagonists are "18," making it tough
to peg the games as outright illegal—would make far more constructive
targets for political outrage."
Edge
Online - Why the -Age of Steam- May Not Last? By Brad Wardell, CEO of
Stardock, operator of Impulse.
"It's far too soon to assume that Steam will continue to dominate five years
out. Thus far, it has largely operated without serious competition. With
other services such as Impulse, Games for Windows Live, Amazon.com,
GamersGate and others upping their own services with unique and compelling
features, expanding their catalogs, and focusing on providing good customer
experiences, I would be very surprised if Steam continues to have such a
large market share (as a percentage) even 18 months from now."
CNET - Is the
video game industry losing the PR battle?
"Based on what I've seen so far from the industry, it's willing to take a
beating from government, lawyers, authors, and concerned groups and it does
little to fight back. Meantime, I receive e-mails from parents on an almost
daily basis asking me why video games are so bad for their kids. Whenever
that happens, I write them a short but informative e-mail saying, 'They're
not as bad as some groups say and here's research to prove it.'"

You haven't provided a single piece of proof to support any of your claims in this thread. I have definitely done this several times but I will summarize it all to make it easier. I am not saying the console is superior to the PC for the 100th time. I am not saying the PC is superior to the console. They both offer unique features, game genres and so on. I am simply refuting their claims that the PC is somehow a better platform for gaming simply based on it's technical capabilities. I've done so in detail several times now. I'm not going to repeat myself 20 more times. I don't really care if you think its "game set match", this isn't a game, it's a discussion.
To summarize and illustrate what both platforms offer and why I feel they are equal:
Console pros
- Ease of use - Satisfactory graphical performance - Large share of developers and publishers targeting the market - Ease of development due to locked hardware specifications - Exclusive games (library dependant on specific console) - handheld capabilities (Nintendo DS, Sony PSP) - Homebrew capabilities - Limited backwards compatibility - Well polished digital distribution with plentiful free and paid content - Easy interface with television and computer for "media center" features
Console cons
- Locked hardware platform means forced upgrades every 5 years - User modifications and custom content harder or impossible to develop - Limited product lifetime support online - Region coding makes importing difficult - Hardware failure requires whole hardware RMA, little or no user ability to repair or upgrade - Several game genres not well represented due to input peripheral support (RTS and MMO specifically as examples) - Digital distribution DRM
PC pros:
- Technical capabilities based solely on user budget (sky is the limit for higher resolutions and so on) - Widespread range of peripheral support - Multitask support (can do things other than game at the same time) - Homebrew/emulation support and communities - Ability for users to self repair software and hardware - User modifications and content (less these days but still a thriving community) - Several digital distribution services - Large library of titles - "Fun" features - screenshots, user movies, etc.
PC cons:
- Shifting hardware platform makes development costly and QA more difficult (leads to more problematic game releases and higher budgets) - Costly upgrades every 3-5 years to keep performance acceptable for gaming - Several game genres unrepresented or abandoned (D&D RPGs, adventure, JRPG, race simulation, flight simulation and so on) - Piracy much more widespread - No longer a widely active lead platform for development (multiplatform releases often lack PC specific features, user interfaces and have problematic input support) - Complexity issues for "average user" - More difficult to interface with a television for media features - DRM
I think all of that is pretty specific, balanced and accurately reflects my opinions on both platforms. For the record I own a Nintendo DS, a Playstation 3, Xbox 360, 4 PC's in the family and several hundred games.
To say that one is "better" than the other is pretty ludicrous. One may be "better" than the other when only comparing one aspect. I can say my Nintendo DS is "better" than my computer because I can take it with me on a train but that doesn't make it a valid statement. Saying that a PC is "better" because it can attain higher resolutions is likewise silly, that's one aspect of the platform.
On a technical basis the PC is superior at handling ANY multiplatform game - they can use console controllers and support higher resolutions, better quality textures, further viewing distances, more crowded scenes, etc. You can plug a PC into an HDTV, like a console, or an ultra-high resolution cinema display. With Steam you also don't need to worry about juggling discs or long load times. How, after all that, is the PC only equal? No the PC is not superior at any multiplatform game. The PC is superior when it is a targeted lead platform for multiplatform development. You ignore the fact that multiplatform titles often don't have support for many of the things you mention. Plugging a PC into an HDTV isn't as simple because of space requirements, many people don't want their PC in their living room or den. Not all games are on Steam as well. That's ignoring other things that might be present in the PC title like DRM which the console version might lack. In fact, many titles are inferior on the PC due to developer neglect. You can say that in theory the PC is better when everything falls into place for a good port and that would be true depending on the genre of course. Sadly that isn't reality right now.
And yes I am cherry picking your post theyarecomingforyou because otherwise the size of this one would blot out the sun I think my above summary addresses the rest of your post adequately.
