Slate Magazine - Should the United States ban a Japanese "rape simulator" game?
"Considering the impossibility of policing the Internet, as well as the availability of English RapeLay translations and forums for years before any politician caught wind of the game, it's unrealistic to think that the game could be banished from America. Very few Japanese developers make an effort to sell eroge to the West, and those that do, like Peach Princess and G-Collections, make content modifications to suit foreign norms and laws. (For example, all underage characters' ages get rounded up to 18, no matter how young the character looks.) These Westernized versions are sold in the United States via import sites like J-List and Play-Asia. Neither company sells RapeLay, but they do offer the popular eroge Yume Miru Kusuri. That game, while more edgy than it is violent, does focus on sex-crazed, underage-looking high schoolers with drug problems and suicide fetishes. RapeLay is appalling, but titles like Yume Miru Kusuri—sold in America after being unconvincingly modified so the protagonists are "18," making it tough to peg the games as outright illegal—would make far more constructive targets for political outrage."

This debate will seemingly go in circles forever. I don't really see how it's hard to understand what we're saying, that the PC is the ebst gaming platform in a ton of ways, but the lack of convienence keeps consoles at the forefront... I think that's pretty common sense myself, but Dades can choose to believe as he wishes.

It can go in circles forever because none of you will concede that the console is also superior in "a ton of ways". You cling to tech specs as if it were the only important thing when technical specs isn't what is driving the market these days. The vast majority of games prove my point, where you can only name a few in your own favor.

Also, to expand on something Jeykk said, one of the best reasons for sticking with the PC I never mentioned is that MS and Sony have too much control for my tastes on the consoles. MS forcing patch size limits and prices on content has ruined a few games like Team Fortress 2, and their general "what we say goes" attitude is ugly.

It's funny because those quality control limitations are there to prevent developers doing what they do on the PC - ship now in a horrid state and patch later. I agree that they shouldn't do this with proven devs who do not use these practices but it's hard to say no problem to one dev and tell another they need to abide by restrictions.

See mods are a valid point, gaming at 2500x1600 with full AA/AF blingbling isn't something the vast majority of the market cares about. That's what drives the enthusiast market to purchase peripherals. If you said "the PC is superior because of mods" then I still wouldn't agree with that because it's a stupid blanket statement comparing only one aspect of one platform to another.

I would however agree that having user modifications is a distinct advantage in that area. Again though, the consoles are learning from the PC here - games like LittleBigPlanet are being built around user content.

You guys want to make some big distinction and act like there is a huge war between consoles and PC's going on because well, you're fanboys. A few of you have even admitted it in this thread. I am not a fanboy, I just like both "platforms" and I'm sorry that drives you so crazy. I'm not going to say the PC is better than a Nintendo DS, nor am I going to say that an Xbox360 is better than a PC. Each has it's own purposes, strengths and unique titles. If you want to argue about dumb shit like which has more ram or whatever then go crazy, I've already said far more than I cared to about this topic and I do agree that it's going in circles now.
