Slate Magazine - Should the United
States ban a Japanese "rape simulator" game?
"Considering the impossibility of policing the Internet, as well as the
availability of English RapeLay translations and forums for years before any
politician caught wind of the game, it's unrealistic to think that the game
could be banished from America. Very few Japanese developers make an effort
to sell eroge to the West, and those that do, like Peach Princess and
G-Collections, make content modifications to suit foreign norms and laws.
(For example, all underage characters' ages get rounded up to 18, no matter
how young the character looks.) These Westernized versions are sold in the
United States via import sites like J-List and Play-Asia. Neither company
sells RapeLay, but they do offer the popular eroge Yume Miru Kusuri. That
game, while more edgy than it is violent, does focus on sex-crazed,
underage-looking high schoolers with drug problems and suicide fetishes.
RapeLay is appalling, but titles like Yume Miru Kusuri—sold in America after
being unconvincingly modified so the protagonists are "18," making it tough
to peg the games as outright illegal—would make far more constructive
targets for political outrage."
Edge
Online - Why the -Age of Steam- May Not Last? By Brad Wardell, CEO of
Stardock, operator of Impulse.
"It's far too soon to assume that Steam will continue to dominate five years
out. Thus far, it has largely operated without serious competition. With
other services such as Impulse, Games for Windows Live, Amazon.com,
GamersGate and others upping their own services with unique and compelling
features, expanding their catalogs, and focusing on providing good customer
experiences, I would be very surprised if Steam continues to have such a
large market share (as a percentage) even 18 months from now."
CNET - Is the
video game industry losing the PR battle?
"Based on what I've seen so far from the industry, it's willing to take a
beating from government, lawyers, authors, and concerned groups and it does
little to fight back. Meantime, I receive e-mails from parents on an almost
daily basis asking me why video games are so bad for their kids. Whenever
that happens, I write them a short but informative e-mail saying, 'They're
not as bad as some groups say and here's research to prove it.'"

@Creston - WoW's figures would pad anything to make it look like it was growing
WoW's biggest income is from monthly payments, and I doubt those are incorporated into sales figures. I don't think WoW is still the best SELLING game on the market. (Expansion packs on release excepted ofcourse.)
Now, that you personally didn't find many games worth playing on the PC in the last few years is fine, but that doesn't mean the entire market is dying. I haven't bought as many games in the past few years because of time constraints, but casually looking around, I see Fear2, Crysis, Crysis Warhead, Farcry 2, Fallout 3, X3:TC, Mass Effect, DoW 2 and I enjoyed all of them to a greater extent.
I bet you Pokemon blows away total sales on everything PC related to date in 2009 besides MMOs. To me that's a sign of some seriously dysfunctional management of an entire industry, and not something growing.
I think The Sims will happily take on those Pokemon numbers, but in any case, I'm not really sure what the point is? You want the PC to make Pokemon games? Younger gameplayers have always been firmly entrenched on consoles (or handhelds), ever since the day of the NES (or gameboy.)
I don't think that's because the PC has too many dark and gritty games, but simply because it's
A) Easier B) Cheaper
Now, for growth, *shrug*, I'm not going to argue whether the PC industry is going in the right path for you or me personally. I liked PC Games a whole lot better 10-15 years ago. As for the industry, however, every year their total revenue increases. Whether that's because of another WoW expansion, or because of two more Sims expansions, or because we got a glut of fantastic shooters, is irrelevant. The game industry exists to make money. It is making money hands over fist. Ergo, it is succesful.
The good news is, the ball is being fumbled so bad by the big names, that the indy/small guys are getting people looking at them for something to buy. I take the excitement of people being able to buy 10 year old games from GoG as a screaming red warning flag of just how sad PC gaming has hit all time lows. Nestolgia is one thing, but people are actually buying them. That's a pretty starved audience.
I think there is a HUGE demand for cheap games, especially in tough economic times. I've bought some games from GOG that I only got because they were cheap. I haven't even installed some of them yet, but I bought them anyways. I probably have 40 or so games on Steam that I bought and haven't installed, but I bought them because they were 5 dollars. It's partially nostalgia, and partially just the fact that I can buy a game for 5 dollars and probably have just as much fun with it (if not more) than I do with today's top titles that cost 50.
The niche market is more easily accessible now because of platforms like Steam, and it drives their sales, but I doubt it's any kind of indication that the top title game industry (for lack of a better word) is doing poorly. Again, they're making record sales pretty much every year.
