On the LEGO Universe Delay

Ten Ton Hammer follows up on release plans for LEGO Universe, the LEGO-themed MMORPG that was announced with a Q4 2008 release date. A quick check of the calendar shows the game has suffered a delay from that plan, and the hammer-wielders spoke with Mark Hansen of LEGO, who indicates the toy maker is in control of the game's release schedule:
The decision has been made within the company to wait to launch [LEGO Universe]. We're trying to align the physical play with the virtual play. We never know what products are going to be "hitting" or not, and we actually have a lot of products that are out there right now that are "hitting." We want to get the feel of LEGO into this game to match those products. We also don't want to detract from those products that are out there that are doing very well.

A lot of our decisions have been focused around what we're going to gain and what we're going to lose by holding this game back. We don't know how long we're going to delay the launch of [LEGO Universe], so I can't tell you anything specific on that. But we can say that it is going to be a delay of some time. Not a long period of time, but we don't know exactly how much.

But because its a polygon box with a face on it, somehow a miracle happens and they can make it entertaining?!

The games really must be tried to be appreciated. They aren't simply making the characters LEGO and calling it a day. The LEGO aspect factors very heavily into the gameplay. Could they have come up with something to replace LEGO, and still have the same game? Perhaps, but it wouldn't be nearly as charming.

Lego Batman was a hoot, but yeah, I can't imagine a Lego MOG being successful.

Thats what I mean, why'd they have to make the characters silly lego blocks for it to be a good game though?! Its like they have to trick themselves mentally if they had made it all UE3 high end textures & characters..they couldn't make it good? But because its a polygon box with a face on it, somehow a miracle happens and they can make it entertaining?! Im not doubting they are fun games..but I dont get it I suppose lol

IMO people are going to be looking for ways to cut back on cash flow, MMOs are going to get hit hard.

Other then that LEGO rulez!! Though I am talking actual LEGO, havent touched any of the video games.

Indeed, I swallowed one of those cylindrical ones once, no idea if it came out the other end.

Adding the LEGO theme to a game doesn't automatically make it good no, but generally the LEGO games such as Star Wars and (especially) Batman are really entertaining. I play the latter with my other half and she enjoys it more than I do.
But she plays as Batman. Damn it.

That all good Wildone, all I'd say in response is that alot of people love the make believe universe and creative freedom found within LEGO.

Cause the Lego series of games are great games, and they are great family games as well.
Have you ever even played or tried them Wildone? Sides without Lego Star Wars there wouldn't have been any GOOD Star Wars Games since KOTOR.

I don't get the fuss around "lego" ANYTHING?? why not just make a game based on whatever it is about, instead of making it "lego" how does that lend itself to a better game? Because its "awwe cute!" people are willing to cut them more slack over a shitty game?
Like Lego Star Wars? Why not just make a good SW game with the 'real' characters and not some 4 sided brick with a face on it?

While the idea of a LEGO MMO sounds seriously fun at first, I can't actually place where the gameplay will come from. Beyond the initial sandbox fun of messing around with LEGO (limited or not) I can't actually think why I would play beyond a month, even if I could create anything from virtual LEGO.

No one is touching my LEGO!!

I'm holding onto it till I die. --- need a coffin? LEGO it! --- need a stairway to Heaven? LEGO it!

I think LEGO is teh win. ( I may take some LEGO to work later today )

A Garry's Mod MMO with LEGO? It could work, but I wouldn't want to have to clear up all the LEGO genitalia that would inevitably 'spring' up.

I really wish I kept my LEGO. Bum.

edit: that's a lot of LEGO mentions, LEGO LEGO LEGO LEGO LEGO!
