Empire: Total War Date; DRM; Specs

The Total War Blog says March 4 is the release date for Empire: Total War, confirming the most recent release date for the next installment in Creative Assembly's large-scale real-time strategy series. They also announce that all copies of the game must be activated using Steam, even if they are purchased at retail or another digital delivery service. They also offer some system specifications, saying the following represents the minimum, rather than the recommended specs:

Operating System: Windows XP 32(service pack 2), Windows Vista 32 OS.
Processor: 2.4 GHz Single Core Intel or AMD equivalent processor.
System Memory: 1GB RAM (XP) 2GB RAM (Vista).
Graphics Card: 256MB DirectX 9.0c compatible video card (shader 2.0 or higher).
Sound Card: Directx9.0c compatible sound card.
Windows compatible mouse & keyboard.
15 GB free uncompressed hard drive space.

I wish for a world where there wasn't any piracy and things like Steam were seen as unnecessary. I also wish for world peace, an end to world hunger, and a million dollars for everyone. And donuts.

But since I don't live in LA-LA land, I have come to accept certain realities. One being that publishers are going to use DRM. Hey, even Stardock is doing it. The difference is that they are (at least seemingly) legitimately concerned with the convenience of the end user first and foremost. Valve with Steam have done the impossible: they have created a DRM platform with enough convenience, functionality, ease-of-use, added value, AND reasonably successful protection without being overly intrusive that both publishers AND the majority consumers seem satisfied with.

It's hard to say just how much of Steam's success is the product of good PR; there is no denying that it has many similarities with the more hated DRM's like Securom. But when PC gamers who once steadfastly opposed any and all DRM have begun embracing Steam en masse, suffice it to say that Valve has definitely done something right. There's got to be more to it than a clever sales pitch.

As far as I am concerned, I embrace Steam based solely on the certainty that it won't really get any worse. If what Steam requires are all of the concessions I'll ever have to make to play great games, then I'll be content. I respect the opinions of those like Bluesfanboi who don't embrace things like Steam as readily; but the majority of PC gamers have, and that means Steam is the future of DRM, and most of us, while a bit short of ecstatic, are okay with that.
