JoWooD's Good Old Games

GOG.com announces some new additions to their DRM-free marketplace. The good old gamers now offer Revolution Software's In Cold Blood for $5.99, and a couple of titles from JoWooD, Painkiller Black Edition and Panzer Elite: Special Edition, for $9.99. They also announce future plans, saying: "Other JoWood games destined for GOG.com include Gothic 2 Gold, Spellforce Platinum, The Guild Gold and Alien Nation." In related news, GameBanshee has a promo code for 10% off your Good Old Games order, an offer that's good through Thursday.

I wouldn't call Gothic 2 the best game ever made but everyone really should give it a try. The Gothic series was the first to really convey a living world where NPCs had lives that didn't revolve around you. They'd cook food, sharpen weapons, train their fighting skills, talk to other NPCs, eat, sleep and carry out their daily routines. Gothic also had surprisingly good AI for the time. If you walked into a stranger's home uninvited, they'd naturally get pissed and tell you to get out. If they saw you steal something, they'd attack. If they saw you sneaking around, they'd tell you to cut it out.

Lockpicking was especially well-done, as it relied not on boring minigames but rather on pattern recognition in real-time. You pressed left and right and if you heard a click, you were one step closer to success. If you heard a clunk, you'd press the opposite key and keep going. Make too many mistakes and your lockpick would snap. And if you broke a lockpick, anybody nearby would hear it. Lockpicking a chest right next to somebody sleeping in bed was always intense.

It's a damn shame that Gothic 3 turned out to be such a travesty. I'm hoping that Gothic 4 and/or Risen fare much better.
