League of Legends: Clash of Fates Interview

The League of Legends: Clash of Fates Preview on 1UP offers a Q&A with Steve "Guinsoo" Feak of Riot Games about League of Legends: Clash of Fates, and the Defense of the Ancients modification for Warcraft III that served as its inspiration and helped create a sub-genre: "When I first started releasing DotA-Allstars maps, I had no way of knowing how popular the game would eventually become. Even before it became as wildly popular as it is today, after working on it for years, I knew that this was really an emerging genre that had the legs to be its own title. It was thus the realization of a dream for me to get the opportunity to work on League of Legends and to help make the title what all of the fans hope it will be. We've been working on League of Legends for over two years now, and I've seen the game grow from a proof of concept to a beautiful and fun game. I can't wait for users to be able to experience it."

I think it’s pretty clear that when people say “DotA”, they mean “DotA-Allstars”. Nowadays, you’d be hard pressed to find anybody who’s played the original Defense of the Ancient mod. I’ve played since Eul’s days (Pre-FT) and you gotta admit: the features Guinsoo implemented completely revamped how the game plays (i.e. item recipes, new heroes, unreal tournament voices, etc.). You can almost say DotA and DotA-Allstars are completely different games, and Guinsoo started DotA-Allstars. But ultimately even HE admits that the community drove most of the changes in the builds and that he wasn’t the only one who helped create DotA.

Well at least he toned down the "I created DotA" bullshit he used to do, but he basically just stole and modified an already popular map when the creator didn't want to bother updating it to warcraft 3's expansion.
