Game Warning Labels

Rep. Baca Introduces Legislation to Make Violent Video Games Sold With Health Warning Label outlines legislation introduced by US Congressman Joe Baca requiring that video games with an ESRB rating higher than "T" carry an additional warning reading: "WARNING: Excessive exposure to violent video games and other violent media has been linked to aggressive behavior." The California representative's is seeking the accountability from the game industry that we are seeking from Washington:

We must hold the video game industry accountable and do everything in our power to ensure parents are aware of the detrimental effects that violent games can have before making decisions on which games are appropriate for their children to play,” concluded Rep. Baca. “I am proud to introduce the Video Game Health Labeling Act of 2009, and am hopeful my legislation can work to stop the growing influence of violent media on America’s children and youth.

Can we start putting health warnings on bibles too?

There's already a label on it to say it's not for little kids, that's what the "M" is for.

Which is fine. The "M" tells consumers that the content of the product is for mature people (and that's totally not subjective). This isn't a warning of content, it's a warning of health risk. It's like saying, "This cigarette contains nicotine" vs "This cigarette contains nicotine and nicotine is an addictive drug."

As soon as that study comes back proving that sitting too close to the TV really does rot your brain, they can start flinging around health warnings. Until then, I'll quietly laugh to myself at the prospect of any sane surgeon general stamping "This product is unhealthy for consumption" on my games.

I don't see the harm in a simple warning on a label on the face of it. Kids do tend to act a little aggressively after extended videogame sessions.

There's been studies both ways on your second statement, with nothing conclusive being said to definitely indicate that it's the truth or that it's damaging even if it is. The problem is that nearly every study done on the subject is funded by one proponent group or the other, getting exactly the result that they paid for when they started the study.

Incidentally, the same things can be said for TV programming, movies, music, and even books. Games are just an easy target, and one that the older generation justifying their jobs in government don't know about or understand.

It's general parenting. Kids act excitedly after Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles or sugary sweets so obviously video games aren't going to be any different. I don't think games should be singled out when it comes to warning, nor do I think every single potentially harmful influence should come with unnecessary boilerplate. It would be as pointless as the hot coffee warnings.

And for those who think liberal Democrats aren't all about restricting your freedoms and this is just a "religious Republican" phenomenon, I truly feel sorry for you in your ignorance. Enough said on that.

Uh, Joe Baca is a Democrat. Rep = Representative of the House, not Republican. JeanNYGUARD has a point, though. The bulk of anti-videogame legislation is proposed and supported by Democrats.
I apologise. I suppose I'm confused because Democrats are typically seen as liberal, so I assume they'd be for lowering of restrictions. Not only that but Jack Thompson is one of the industry's harshest critics and is highly religious and a Republican.

A Democrat... suprise surpise... Its funny everytime theres a antigun anti video game issue... its always a Liberal Democrat.

I'm curious if you've actually ever heard of that political party, or if it's just ironic coincidence. Americans always seem to have a funny conception of the political meaning of 'liberal' and 'conservative' to me, nowadays.

Incidentally, this bill was co-sponsored by a Republican (Frank Wolf). Appealing to the moral mob appeals to both parties.

(oh, and of course we all know it's stupid, labelling based on sketchy evidence at best... it's like labelling bibles with 'Catholicism leads to child abuse' or something)

Hardly surprising that it's a Republican backing it. The Republican Party needs to figure out what it stands for, not what it stands against - everything I hear is always about what's wrong, is always about fear mongering.

This doesn't mean they are necessarily liberal, as there are conservative Democrats, but they are Democrats nonetheless.

We've survived long enough without our own personal Fucktard o Reilly, Jean.

There's no way this gains ground anyways, least of all at a time when consumption is to be lauded, not restricted.

Honestly, I never get why video games are isolated out when the mainstream media is filled with violent images. Even the news now shows dead and bloodied bodies lying around after floods / shootings. Hardly surprising that it's a Republican backing it. Where are the peer reviewed and published studies in prestigious pyschological journals that contain evidence to support this?

"warning; children learn how to act from people and their environment. so hitting their mother with a beer bottle may send the wrong messages"

People have been violent sociopaths long before video games. a warning label on video games won't change that. people are also stupid enough to think this garbage helps.

after theyve put a warning label on everything and nothing has changed, maybe then they'll require a license to breed FINALLY.

Children should come with warning labels instead. WARNING: Society is tired of parenting your children! If you don't want to, keep your fucking pants on!

If you look at this kind of legislation, violence is behind their own actions. Sure, they start with modest action against you, but ultimately their power, the power of government, is rooted in violence.

"WARNING: Excessive exposure to violent video games and other violent media has been linked to aggressive behavior."

I don't have a problem with it since I know how to purchase games for myself and my children. But if Baca sincerely believes the studies, how about applying it to all media (film, music, games) and not pick solely on video games, as if he has some sort of grudge.

do everything in our power to ensure parents are aware of the detrimental effects that violent games can have before making decisions on which games are appropriate for their children to play

Sadly, parents don't care, that's the problem. I was in Gamestop a few months back standing in line, and here's this mother buying GTA San Andreas for her son who can't be more than 11-years-old. The guy behind if warned her of the rating and what it contained, but she didn't care.

You can't legislate human behavior...

Anyone want to start a pool on how long it'll take this to get struck down? Last I checked, health warnings had to warn against legitimate and proven health issues.

SURGEON GENERAL'S WARNING: SMOKING MAKES YOU PISSY AND IRRITABLE.
