| btw -- i'm playing persona 4 now and its a hoot and beats any console RPG that came out this year. Difficult to take all that seriously with the "relationship simulator for teens" thing that is half od the game though. |

Some in this topic thought BioShock was a useless piece of garbage. It had flaws, but it tried new things as far as story went, with interesting gameplay backing it. Uh, what? You realize that Bioshock was essentially a dumbed-down remake of SS2, right? It didn't really innovate at all. I still found the game enjoyable but innovative? Not really. |

Reader's choice tend to be far more about hype and I'm shocked people say otherwise.
Readers are stupid. Hell, most readers with the time to vote online are 14 year old males that play few games, but insane amounts of hours, and can be spoonfed anything.
Critics play hundreds of games, for fewer hours, and need more convincing.
A significant amount of these lists rebelled against GTA4. Which gives them some credibility, to me, much like the ones a few years back which tore Doom 3 apart. But, in the long run, the best games were higher budget games, with some exceptions. The Witcher was a buggy mess at release, wasn't it? Savage 2 tried new things but didn't do anything terribly interesting.
Sometimes I don't know why I argue these points here, though. Some in this topic thought BioShock was a useless piece of garbage. It had flaws, but it tried new things as far as story went, with interesting gameplay backing it. That made it more innovative than much that has come since. |

| Metacritic is strictly a media hype meter when it comes to game reviews. It can be handy to figure out which major games are terrible, but quite useless to figure which games are actually good and worth playing. |

Readers choice awards are some what closer to the mark "IF" they have the right games to vote for and not just AAA titles.
Witcher EE deserves some kind of recognition even though it came out last year in its original form its still much improved and a great game. |

| Here here, these lists are a big load of steaming cow pat. Nearly all console games I personally rate a game highly which tries to do something different if not perfectly all these games are clones. I'd say mount and blade would be up there in my list as would savage 2. But its been quite a poor year for Pc gaming in my experience, ports and a lot of non events, rool on 2009 if darkfall is half what they promiced it should be the next big thing, well thats coming from a hopeful old 97 Ultima Online player. |

When others have used that argument, your comment was 'that doesn't make it right'. What argument are you talking about? I was pointing out that AAA games, typically with ~5 hour campaigns, are commonplace in "best of" charts while Braid, with a similar length, is not. Therefore, game length is not a factor in such charts.
And how would you know seeing as you are the most anti-console person here? Because I've played it? At work, I have access to the Xbox Live Partnernet which lets you play the beta versions of Live Arcade games. That's how I played through Braid. |

I think Braid is about as long as most AAA single-player campaigns That is to say, about 5 hours. When others have used that argument, your comment was 'that doesn't make it right'.
It also has a lot more depth and challenge than said AAA games. And how would you know seeing as you are the most anti-console person here? |

In the end, Best Of lists are simply a popularity contest. It's not a matter of what's the best but rather, what's the most hyped. |

Which isn't to say these games can't be good. It's just that the odds of them being "best" are exceedingly high.
Most are amusing but brief distractions. |

Fion quite the absurd rant there.
Yes. Some indie games are great. Many aren't. Yes, some are innovative. But usually it's one innovation.
Braid got a lot of acclaim. It also cost $180,000 to make and is exceedingly simple. Most indie games follow just that: they're exceedingly simple. Short stories compared to a novel.
They get blown out of the water by the small handful of AAA games that manage to be every bit as innovative, if not more.
It's like whining that many AA baseball teams have innovative coaching but get overshadowed by MLB teams. Yes, most MLB teams blow. But some are far more innovative than those minor league teams. Even if behind the curve on minor league innovation they manage to incorporate far more. Because, honestly, in this genre it's all about money, unlike others. It only takes one person to write a lasting book. Only takes three or five for a lasting album. Lasting movies can be made on small budgets.
But not lasting video games. The entry costs are still too high. Even something like Passage, the indie darling, totally sucks and is relevant only for the point people take from it. The point from a complete douchebag jackass "developer." |

Why is it that every 'top 10 of the year' list or even single f'ing review sight that does a top game of the year, every video game award ceremony, refuses to even consider a game that isn't either AAA or uber-hyped before release. Every year it's the same group of 100 websites giving the award to that years $100 million blockbuster game with absolutely no mention of some of the greatest games of that year that happen to be surprises form smaller companies or even indie games.
It wouldn't be because those small companies with their amazingly innovative and fun, but small budget games, simply don't have the money to 'donate' to various website and elbow the editor to make sure their game is in the mix of top games. Naw.. couldn't be anything like that.
On all seriousness there were some absolutely fantastic low budget/indie games this year that frankly SHOULD at least be in the running. From Mount & Blade,to SINS, Witcher Enhanced to WoG and other offerings such as Sacred 2 that while having serious problems at release, patched up is one of the most enjoyable Diablo style RPG's since Diablo 2.
It simply doesn't make sense to me.
