EA Games on Steam

Steam News announces that several EA games are now available to their North American customers, including Spore (confirming recent speculation) as well as Spore Creepy & Cute Parts Pack, Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning, Mass Effect, Need for Speed Undercover, and FIFA Manager 2009. They also say in the coming weeks they will also be adding Mirror's Edge, Red Alert 3, and Dead Space, though there is no indication at this time as to whether they will expand the EA catalog on Steam to other territories. Update: A post on the Steam Users' Forums by one of the moderators states the EA games on Steam will have no third-party DRM (i.e., SecuROM). Thanks nin. We have asked Valve for official word on this as well as whether there are plans to open this up outside of North America. Steam has been listing third-party DRM on game pages lately, and their page for Spore does not mention SecuROM.

I would wager this was part of the plan all along. Launch DRM, if that meets resistance, push people to consoles and Steam. EA buying Steam is the next expectation.

I have a couple Steam accounts but have refrained from buying in to them like Ipod and Itunes. For several reasons:

1) Business Stability - Steam is not secure enough based on public comments if they can be believed. Secure in the sense that they are going to stand the test of time and be under perpetual ownership of an entity that can be trusted. Until that is resolved, I will not be buying in to the system on a major level.

2) End User Security - I have read several complaints from people who had 100+ games purchased and lost their account. This is intolerable if those claims can be believed, even if it was due to their own stupidity. Having a real recourse to secure ones purchases should something happen, is a very big issue and needs to be solved.

3) Integrity of front line support - Too many game companies have used the dummy shield to stonewall customers when it comes to games. Especially in MMOs. When you are talking about a service that has the potential to rival Itunes in profit and popularity, you have to have a customer service as good as Applecare to deal with people and make sure their purchases are secure.

4) Speed of updates - There is a lag between publicly released patches and Steam. It varies, and sometimes it's quick. The ideal situation would be fore patching to go live at the same time. Steam already get's to offer games quicker.

5) Garauntee that no elimination of rights to use a game will be executed for any reason. The idea of a company having a hand on the kill switch of my entire software purchases is a big reason I will not buy in to Steam.

Steam if done right is a big win/win situation, right now it's not there yet in my opinion. Impulse needs to draw some more solid titles to truly take off. I would compete directly with GOG to get any titles I could get, or even buy them out (or merge) at some point. Then you have 2 very viable platforms that need to secure the points outlined above and everyone wins. 2 account names, 2 passwords, secure permanent purchase of games, I would be sold. Until then I will continue to buy boxed titles without DRM.

PS3 resurgance by GOW3 - Check! Mass Effect for PS3 - Check! Diablo 3 for consoles? I say "For sure"!
