Half of American Adults Gamers

A new report from the Pew Internet & American Life Project (Adobe Acrobat-format; pew indeed) informs American adult video game players that we are now a plurality, as their research says: "53% - of all American adults play video games of some kind, whether on a computer, on a gaming console, on a cell phone or other handheld device, on a portable gaming device, or online." This abstract offers other data, including an interesting statistic about senior citizens: "Among older adults 65+ who play video games, nearly a third play games everyday, a significantly larger percentage than all younger players, of whom about 20% play everyday." Also, while consoles are most popular among young adults, the PC is still top gun: "Out of all the gaming devices, computers are the most popular among the total adult gaming population, with 73% of adult gamers using computers to play games, compared with 53% console users, 35% who using cell phones, and 25% using portable gaming devices."

And what percentage of this 73% are playing PopCap and Flash games?

I don't know, but I bet the percentage is lower than the percentage that makes up the bulk of digital download sales (e.g. Steam, Direct-2-Drive, World of Warcraft digital purchase, etc.). None of these purchases are included in most data trackers.

In case anyone missed that!
And what percentage of this 73% are playing PopCap and Flash games? I'm all for PC gaming, but I think some will see this as 73% of the people are playing Crysis Warhead or Battlefield; hell, I would venture to guess that 50% of the 73% (36.5% of the total for those keeping score) are WOW players.

They aren't telling us something we don't already know...

As for who's more hardcore, the only people that actually give a shit about that are the kids. I'm old enough that peer pressure doesn't have an effect on me, so if all the "cool" kids are stroking their epeens online, you'll forgive me if I give it a miss and play a game... =)

On the plus side, with all the kids word wanking the web the rest of us might actually be able to have a fun round of something. ; )

Well, be it cel phone, xbox, Wii or PC, that's a lot of electronic gamers. After 30 years of gaming it's nice to know I have a 50/50 shot of the person at the other end of the conversation "getting it" at some level.

Your disrespect/hatred for the cheaper gaming devices is laughable and futile.

You remind me of the jerks who refuse to talk about any automobile that is not made by company/country X. I will go play Uncharted on the PS3 now and hit up some Company of Heroes later on my PC

Wow, so how many cars do you own? Tiny

I will go play Uncharted on the PS3 now and hit up some Company of Heroes later on my PC and wonder what everyones problem is... I'm sure it has something to do with your inability to comprehend a controller, which is strange cause when I was a lad PC gamers were the guys that invested in 100 button Hotas setups for their sims... double stick and a dozen buttons is piss easy compared to that. Maybe y'all got a case of consolitis yourselves?
QFT, I'll be playing Burnout Paradise on the PS3 in the morning, GTA IV on the 360 in the afternoon, and play some BF2142 at night. It's all about the gaming experience and what fills your needs over a platform or brand.

The majority (probably quite vast) of these adult gamers are playing web games, hardcore next-level PC games from Popcap, on Facebook and Solitaire.

I'm unlikely to class a gamer as "hardcore" unless they either spent a lot of time in competitive multi-player games, or owned and regularly used several of the formats. A hardcore gamer plays games, and will take any route to feed their need. If you think it's dedicated to a platform then sorry, you're just a fanboy, and you're missing out on some excellent gaming unique to each platform.

Techie, you're an idiot, IMO a serious gamer is someone who pays attention to the industry on a daily basis and invests their money in that industry KNOWING what kind of investment they're making, not some dumbass that buys a game because the box looks cool. This doesn't matter if it's on a PC or a console.

I would say this makes sense since a majority of the NES kids (myself included) have grown up on gaming and now the Wii and Flash gaming are starting to hit the casual crowd. I'm 34 and have had almost every console out (the majors anyway, no 3DO or Jaguar sorry to say) and have been amazed at what each generation brings. I also have enjoyed PC gaming but haven't upgraded my rig in about 3 years, so for now I'm on a hiatus.

I turn 45 this Wednesday and I've been a PC gamer since 1998. My opinion, the older you get the more you think of the financial aspects of it all. I have a PC, why not play games on it? Why buy a console when I already have something to play games on? Besides, slight arthritis in the hands makes using a controller a miserable experience. The Keyboard and Mouse are easier to use.
Consoles are schwag.

You think playing Left 4 Dead, the McDonalds of shooters makes you a serious gamer? Serious gamers shoot people who play that stupid joke for target practice during level changing intermissions.

And then they smash your Dell or HP Pavilion into a thousand plastic bits right in front of you, leaving all that mediocre gear in a trash heap at your feet, so you can see your utter defeat.

Now GBTW noob.

PC GAMERS FTW!!!! Eventually when were older we all usually "graduate" to the next level of gaming & that is PC Gaming. If your not gaming primarily on a PC then I'm sorry I cant take you as a "serious" gamer. There's always that one guy that butts into your conversations at work while your talking about last nights Left 4 Dead game & says something like "Yea, I know what you mean I had a crazy game of Wii Tennis last night, hardcore man hardcore"....LOL!
