I'm playing this game now and a fixed isometric would have been ideal for it. The optional "overhead camera" is fine though it still swivels around when it shouldnt during real-time combat. The default camera, on the other hand, makes the game annoying and unplayable in my opinion

I find it hard to believe of the multiple camera positions available in the games you were unable to find one that you could work with... or even switch between two while playing?

"This is definitely an issue of incompetence."

I agree...

It's a side effect of forcing a game to full 3D when all evidence says isometric would be fine.

Nope. It's actually a side effect of Obsidian being fucking n00bs. There are 1000s of full 3D games where the camera is working fine. This is definitely an issue of incompetence. Just like the lack of basic RPG/RTS-style party control (remember the lack of multiselect anyone?) upon the game's release. How they could possibly "forget" to include such basic features is way beyond my imagination. Obsidian need to go back to game design school and start over from the beginning. That bunch of amateurs.

The camera is still dodgy

*grrrr*

I hated the camera controls in the main game. Then they changed it for "Mask of the Betrayer". I hated them more. And you say, that they are STILL dodgy? Come on, how hard can it be to design this?

I've put about 8 hours into it so far. The default difficulty is way too easy but the next level "D and D ruleset" has combat more like Baldur's Gate 2 and Icewind Dale 1. The camera is still dodgy but there's a birdeye view option which I actually like quite a bit. The biggest issue is the team AI which still sucks in countless ways. You can pause the combat at any time and issue commands (which is a great way of getting around your teams' AI deficiencies) but the speed of combat when unpaused is too fast to see what is exactly going on. The real-time combat works against your offensive spell users when it is 1000% easier to create a fighter and just have the AI auto-fight your enemies with weapons. I haven't encountered any actual dungeons yet, which is odd. Just single room locations where you have one fight and then leave. Over all, I'm liking it but it gets an "8." Baldur's Gate 2 is still the better game.

Current annoyance: My cleric still doesnt heal anyone during or after combat even with the "use spells without limit" option enabled. He'll use buffs but no healing. The AI needs work.

So is this good or not?

The fringe over at RPG Codex seem to think it's good, so it must be filled with crunchy old-school goodness.

I haven't played that much of it yet, but so far it looks pretty good.

Death is now functions according to DnD rules: if you hit 0HP then you are incapacitated, losing additional HP every round, until either a teammate heals you or you die. If you die, then you have to pay for a resurrection back in town.

Combat is quite a bit more challenging now, partly due to the new death system and partly because the encounters are just tougher. It took me a half dozen reloads or so to finish the opening battle.

There are skill checks everywhere: every dialogue so far has had multiple skill checks. Likewise, the two short quests I've done so far both made liberal use of skills. Furthermore, Overland Travel relies on skills such as survival, spot, hide, and diplomacy extensively.

I'm really, really early in the game so this is all I can comment on so far. I spent about 3 hours crafting my party so I very little of my play time has been spent advancing the plot.

It took them 8 years to realize this formula actually works?

A developer trying new formulas doesn't mean that they think the old forumla doesn't work. The fact that there were many very successful sequels and xpacs developed with the infinity engine means that developers were quite aware already that the formula works.

If you are still playing the original or MotB campaign, wait with installing this one untill a new patch is out. Apparently Storm of Zehir breaks a few things.
