Good Old Games Gets Unreal

GOG.com, the online home of good old games, announces the addition of part of Epic's Unreal series to their DRM-free marketplace. They start things off offering Unreal Gold and the Unreal Tournament Game of the Year Edition, and they will eventually be adding Unreal II: The Awakening Special Edition, and Unreal Tournament 2004 Editor's Choice Edition.

I don't think Epic as it currently exists is capable of making a worthy successor to Unreal. They have become so enamored of the 14 year old console crowd that it reflects in their design decisions (hover skateboard anybody?). What you would get would have nothing of the ambience that made the original Unreal so good.

Well said.

Wish GOG would have gotten Epic Pinball, that was a blast...

Bah. UT had more game modes, weapons, maps, etc, but I think Q3 had better fundamental gameplay.

I agree, UT never 'felt' right to me, but then again maybe that's because I was really good at Q3 at the time and perhaps a little zealous in my games of choice in my youth.

As to Quake Zero, I'm looking forward to it. It sounds like plain old Q3 without the mods and gibs, plus all the matchmaking and friends and achievements that the kids are so fond of these days.

It'll be nice to just load up a quick game in the browser and go bounce around q3ctf4 getting railed to death by a new generation. Too bad about the gibs though.

Well the upcoming "Quake Live" essentially IS Quake 3, so that's not entirely true (even if this isn't quite what you meant).

I don't really consider Quake Live to be a new game, given that it's basically a slightly modified version of Quake 3. Now, if id were to make a full-fledged, big budget Quake 5 that retained the speed and twitchiness of Quake 3, I'd be pleasantly surprised.

Sadly, neither Epic nor id are ever going to make games like that again since they are now console developers.

I loved UT. I had been an Id fan up until that point, but was shocked to discover that, in my eyes, UT destroyed Quake 3.

I wish Epic would make an in-house true sequal to Unreal- Voiceless protagonist, long journey across land, Nalis and Skar.Unreal 2 completely missed the point, having disjointed levels jumping from planet to planet all the time. Guess it won't ever happen though. They're just in the engine farming business now.

And lets not forget stepping out of the Vortex Ryker to see the Nyleve Falls for the first time. That was a special moment in gaming history.

Meh.

$9.99 is steep for these. Each is about a decade old. Neither does anything particularly worth remembering now. They're just FPS shooters. Yes, they're important in the history of the genre, but your $9.99 can go much, much further with any of dozens of games influenced by these two that do everything they do better.

I loved UT. I had been an Id fan up until that point, but was shocked to discover that, in my eyes, UT destroyed Quake 3.

However, that nostalgia isn't worth $9.99 to me. Especially as so much of what made UT fun was playing online, something less likely to happen now.

I'll pay $9.99 for old games, but they have to be games that do something that either hasn't been done since or hasn't been done as well since. A lot of old strategy games fall into that category, as do many god games, etc. FPS games? Not so much. Some manage to stay distinguished 8+ years after release, but not many. I don't see either of these being amongst them. Not for more than $4.99 at least.

Ahh, Morpheus, super low-gravity fun! The first time I ever experience low gravity in a game. I got motion sick from it the first time and fought to master it.

That's one of the gaming moments I'll remember when I'm on my deathbed, while my grandkids are playing their Gameboy Ultimates with Holographic technology.

Its time for us all to ditch these modern shooters and start playing Unreal Tournament again.

That was such a perfect game.

Nice deal, even though I have every one of those games and they continue to work on XP with no problems. Still holding out for them to release System Shock and System Shock 2 though.

Very nice. It's a pity that given Epic's decay they won't be able to add UT3, or they should rename themselves OldGames.com
