Valve versus the HL2 Hax0r

Valve Tried to Trick Half Life 2 Hacker Into Fake Job Interview on Wired.com offers in interesting tale of intrigue stemming from the theft and subsequent leak of the Half-Life 2 source code in 2003. One story of an FBI raid in San Francisco surfaced shortly after that, but the new Wired story details efforts at tracking down Axel "Ago" Gembe, a German hacker who admitted responsibility for the data breach. A sting operation was hatched to convince Gembe he was on track to be hired by Valve, and the FBI attempted to lure him from German into the US for arrest under the guise of a job interview. Gembe ultimately did not fall for the sting, but he was charged in Germany for the crime, and was sentenced to probation. His legal status is still uncertain, however, as he has been indicted by federal prosecutors in Los Angeles in association with a distributed denial-Of-service attack by a satellite TV provider, as Gembe is alleged to have created and supplied the Agobot malware used in the attacks. Thanks nin.

Changing your name doesn't make it any less true.
It's especially obvious to anyone who is a Red Hot Chili Peppers fan. It's a shame he has to sully their awesomeness with his crap.

Really though, it's no surprise to see posts by Throw Away Your Television removed, as all he ever does is troll and bate people into fights...

Then we can safely call you a hypocrite too.

You seem a little obsessed. I'd appreciated it if you would cut this kind of harassment out.

Thanks!
Sure, no problem!

I've lurked on this site (with posts here and there) for years and with the exception of a certain user with way too many posts who had some strange encounters with *REMOVED*, I don't think I've ever seen it get out of hand.

Move along...

Blue is one of the, if not THE, most reasonable admins about and I've been truly surprised with what I have got away with (usually in the heat of the moment). Really though, it's no surprise to see posts by Throw Away Your Television removed, as all he ever does is troll and bate people into fights... every bloody topic he's there trying to start a fight. I regularly disagree with Jerykk but at least he's able to put together a coherent argument, regardless of whether I agree with it.

I just stumbled upon all this, but I must say, Blue sure "REMOVES" things that are not offensive quite often. I have been banned for remarks that were legit but not in line with Blue (even if they were somewhat unpopular or offensive).

I can see a remove for someone doing advertising or just gibberish, which may be the case here, but Blue more often than not is a hypocritical control freak Nazi sometimes.

removed soon I am sure.

Some people don't have time to read every article as a whole because they are busy with "real life" (TM)... especially because we're dealing with a two year old story here.

You're right, however, in Blue's note about the article, he states that the hacker was sentenced to probation. =) Third line down if you're looking.

It *is* police work. How, exactly, is it FBI work though? Just because they guy left the country, or is it FBI work because it's an eCrime and almost nobody within the police business has any knowledge or experience with eCrime?

But seriously, if you're computer network gets hacked...you're on your own. Don't call the FBI, don't call 911, solve it yourself.

Elaborate, please. How exactly does one "solve it themselves"?

So, what: You figure out who it is and where he is...then what? How do you "solve it yourself"; beat him up? Citizens arrest?

Seriously - this is what the FBI and the police are for; investigating crimes and then finding and arresting criminals. This is police work.

Here's one more hypothetical situation: You come home and find all your possessions are missing. Well, it didn't kill you and it's not sex trafficking or a terrorist threat, so obviously - according to your logic - you shouldn't call the police. You should, "solve it yourself", right? Oh and your bank account is empty too. You're not dead though, so clearly not police work. Nice logic.

Anyway, I believe it should be forbidden by law to trick a known criminal to your country, to make him pay for the damage he did inside that country.

So the alleged "evil" of Valve in not providing AI up to your standards is greater than that of, say, a serial child murderer hiding in another country?

The number the left has done on you peoples' brains never ceases to impress me. I have a harder time training my dog.
