Mostly agreed Prez. It still shocked me how many voted for McCain and perhaps you are right. Some folks were really voting "against Obama" rather than "for McCain." Its a plausible notion to explain some of the votes. McCain's last debate was deal-breaker for me and I'm glad for that last debate. Obama might be dry, careful, and robotic, but McCain was acting like a cranky old guy, but with the off-putting smirks and sarcasms of a witless teenager. Not good for diplomacy.

I agree Batman. The polls showed the number one reason Obama was voted in was... Change! And when asked what that change meant... most people couldn't come up with anything sensible to say. Sad when you think about it. But that is the system.
He's never run a small business let alone a city or a state. Plus he was only in the Senate for a few months before deciding he could take on the job of Pres. Mind you that this was just months after he said he wasn't qualified to do the job.

Prez: That's mostly fair, and that's pretty much what I expected your response to be. Still, some of those people worked their way into that Good ole' boy club. Most were born into it, but some of them really do have hard work behind it.
I wanted to cry in 2004 when our choice was between two C students that were legacied into Yale, though.

Interesting observation. But the one thing you may be missing is that in recent years, Americans are as likely to cast a vote against a candidate as they are to cast one for a candidate. Coupled with the ridiculously rigid 2-party system we are inexplicably saddled with, you end up seeing weird things like people voting Bush into a second term with a popularity rating below 50%. A great deal of those votes were against Kerry, not for Bush. I really don't feel like detailing the myriad reasons why Kerry was such a terrible candidate; suffice it to say he was bad enough to get Bush into office for a second term! Likewise, a sizable portion of the 50 some-odd million votes McCain got were most certainly votes against Obama, who gave most moderate to conservative people all the legitimate reasons they needed to NOT want to see him in office.
Having said that, you are spot on about how polarized the US is. It's as bad as I've ever seen it, and quite possibly as bad as it's ever been. The media plays no small part in that - they LOVE keeping Americans at odds with one another however they can - it allows them to maintain relevancy and ratings by simply stirring the pot at the right time.

It looks like Obama creamed Mcain when you see the electoral votes but when you look at the popular vote he only won by 6%. 55 million people voted for Mcain!?! Just how bad does your party have to screw up before you wont vote for them? I swear the republicans could have run a Manson\Bundie ticket and still got 50 million people to vote for them, and its the same for the democrates too, your country is as polerized as ever.

Obama wins, great news, I hope for americans that he can walk the talk.
Bush now has his legacy, he screwed up so bad that he enabled this whole movement to happen, I guess he did sooo bad that in the end he did good. I do not belive that under any other circumstances could Obama have won.
Obama is already a far better president then Bush and he hasnt even taken office yet. Largest voter turn out in decades and he has rallied the population to give a shit, well half of it anyway. People seem to say he only has the ability to give great speeches and rally people but in essence isnt that one of the most important qualitys of a leader? He is also most likely one of the most intelligent men the hold the office. He is smart and can lead, sounds like the best man for the job to me.

As far as I know gay couples CAN get married in the form of a civil union and have all the privileges married folks have. What I think prop 8 did is say the word "marriage" means "one man, one women". Gay couples in civil unions can still say to themselves and their friends "we're married".

Funny you should ask Mag. It's actually a fair question, and you are right to ask it. In my view, the point of our "diatribes" is not so much to say we have someone better in mind, but more of a critique of the process of selecting the man who ultimately got into the White House.
I can't speak for anyone else as to who would be better; everyone has their own opinions, and when it comes to politics, they can be very strong ones. My personal disenchantment with the process and with who ended up winning is based simply on the fundamental belief that I have that this was an incredibly weak field of candidates. To be sure, the last few elections have been utter disappointments when one considers what they offered in terms of candidates. I mean come on - look at who we have had to choose from in the past. Bush? Gore? Kerry? Edwards? Clinton? Romney? Sharpton? Guiliani? McCain? Obama? Are you seriously telling me that these yokels are the best this country has to offer? My God - I personally know a dozen more honest, more intelligent, more genuine, more qualified people than these buffoons just in my own neighborhood. Personally, I have no doubt that on the issue of leadership, character, and understanding of the Constitution, I could have wiped the floor with McCain and Obama easily. But, alas, neither I, nor you, nor any of my neighbors are part of the elitist establishment that determines who will make up the field of potential nominees. It' the consummate good ole' boy club, and none of us 'little folk' are welcome in. We as a constituency don't seem too concerned about that anyway; we are apparently more content just pointlessly bickering amongst ourselves about which idiot from the pre-determined pool of idiots is slightly lees of a moron than the others. A Greek philosopher (I believe it was Plato, but I'm not positive) said "Those who deem themselves too smart or too righteous for politics doom themselves to be ruled by those dumber and less virtuous than themselves." Can you think of a more appropriate, more fitting synopsis of American politics?

Could McCain have fixed the problems with the country? No. Can Obama? No. Could Romney, Paul, Giuliani, Clinton? Nope. But you know what? Obama gave the best speeches. He's the most charismatic.
