Mythic on WoW's WAR "Imitation"

There's a Warhamnmer Online: Age of Reckoning interview on GamesIndustry.biz where Mark Jacobs discusses Mythic's recently released MMORPG. An interesting bit that's highlighted in a separate post is Mark's contention that PvP elements in the upcoming World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King expansion are inspired by the release of Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning: "It wasn't like all of a sudden the idea of open world PVP or leveling through PVP came into their heads and went 'nobody's ever done this before'. I don't think it was accidental that they're talking about doing it when Warhammer comes out. Four years and suddenly, miraculously, at the same time Warhammer comes out that's when they start talking about these things... I think it was Jeff Kaplan who said they like to look at other games and learn from them - well, I'm flattered."

You know, I actually sort of like both games (the Warhammer setting is 1,000,000,000x better than WoW's garbage "lore") but you have to admit that WoW has tighter gameplay. Your class's abilities and skills are incredibly intuitive, solid and fun. AoR has that very familiar MMO "floatiness". Classes feel very much the same.

I agree 110% with every point in this comment. I've never been able to describe the general feeling I get from most MMOs I've tried, but floatiness is the best description I've heard yet. What's with that?! Why can't devs seem to get it right?

WAR is the closest to WOW's tight gameplay I've experienced to date, but it's still just not there. Maybe Blizzard's netcode and client communication is just that much better. Someone else needs to figure it out.

It's funny that "open-world PVP" is touted at AoR's strongest feature. There was 10x more ganking going on while leveling up in WoW after launch.

If I sound like I'm shitting on AoR... well it's probably because they shafted the High Elves. I mean WTF? Mark Jacobs must be a Dark Elf fanboy.

All my friends bought AoR but they've all agreed to go back to WoW in November. Ugh.

Hell yea world pvp has been in WOW forver. Who here rememebrs the endless raids on crossroads? The endless back and forth battles of southshore to tarren mill? Sure for along time there were no rewards for pvp till honor came out, then there was an even bigger flux of pvp. Soon people were grinding honor just to get new ranks. Honor gear finally came into play, battle grounds sprouted up.

On a pvp server cant go out in the open without someone trying to gank you in the world. Gathering herbs in the middle of no where can be down right dangerous.

To me Wintergrasp is just the next step in pvp for wow. I heard about wintergrasp even before WAR really.

I think he was pointing out that what you pointed out was pretty stupid to begin with. Sad that this has to be pointed out to you.

Saying something makes no sense and is stupid is different from saying that something makes sense, but is stupid, but thanks for adding your thoughts into the mix.

And my original post was a joke fibro, a sarcastic exaggeration on my part, and taking what you wrote literally to match your hyperbole.

So sure, pointing out that your statement about Jacobs was stupid, was stupid.

But anyways, pretty off topic, and the conversation here has devolved to the level of gamespot forums.

He said everything Jacobs said is stupid, regardless of context.

I'm just pointing out how broad such a statement is by quoting something that Mark wrote which I don't consider stupid.

Sad that I have to spell it out for you

Says you prophet. To bad the reviews.. most of the fans.. and the sales don't show it. %99 of its players agree its end game is severely lacking still. That coupled with the fact they still plan to release 2 of the beta classes points to a game that is simply unfinished.. and thus will be relegated to a distant second place with all the other WoW wannabies who are also unfinished.

Yes, says me. I'm not pretending to claim what other people's opinions are.

But you'll have to forgive me if I don't really care what WoW fans have to say about how much a game they're not playing sucks.

The game is doing very well sales-wise.
The 99% thing is a complete fabrication with no basis, so not sure how to respond to that other than "no, but whatever."
They're releasing two classes down the road. I challenge anyone who has spent any time with the game to say it's not finished. The game is polished, stable, and runs well. It has more content now than most MMO's have after an expansion or two.
Sales numbers don't mean jack squat about the quality of a game. Halo 3 outsold Half-Life 2 by a lot of copies, so it's clearly the better game... right? Of course not.

I'm not arguing about WoW's popularity, I'm saying Warhammer is a better game. After 5 70's in Warcraft and four years of playing it, there's more point and purpose to what I do in Warhammer on my way to level 20 than anything I've done in WoW for that last two years.

I'm glad Blizzard actually has to take notice, because in the end, consumers almost always benefit from product competition.

Totally agree with that comment. I currently play WAR and think it is a great game. I really liked WOW and I hope to play it again when Lich King comes since most of my buddies are still in WOW. I'm not going back to WOW till they deal with some glaring class balance issues ...cough, cough...shaman...cough.

Christ you are an idiot. This isn't about the damned graphics.

Elessar called out "WoW fanboys" and then makes fanboy statements himself. It's hypocritical. If he had just stuck to stating opinions instead of calling out fanboys and then insulting them...I wouldn't have said anything.

Saying something like "Age of Conan has better graphics than WAR and anyone who doesn't see it is blind." does not mean that I'm an AoC fanboy. In fact, I really don't like AoC. Saying Red Alert 3 has better graphics than Warcraft III and if you don't see that you're blind doesn't mean I love EA or hate on Warcraft fans. It's just a fact, and you can hate a game but still realize it has good graphics - like doom 3.

You cannot possibly infer whether Elessar actually enjoys WAR as game or not just from the sentence you quoted. Forming the conclusion that Elessar loved WAR and is a WAR fanboy simply because he praised the graphics is unjustified, and is an assumption fit for a retard, or a WOW fanboy. Take your pick.

@Brubold:

by that argument, 'RTS games blow' because there is not a lockable timescale when setting up a game and i would agree with you if you used a word other than 'blow.'

analogy:

Officer Fired After Tasering Teen for Fun at a Birthday Party

except, you know, that has to do with ACTUAL violence.

as Al Swearengen said time and time again, 'cocksuckers.'

@JeffD

WC3 came out long after Warhammer Fantasy Battle was around. Face it, Blizzard ripped off the look of their game. I don't blame Blizzard entirely for this though as GW had a serious stick up their arse about making computer versions of their TT game for years.

To this day none of them allow you to build armies and have good strategic turn based games with friends. RTS games blow because the only "strategy" involved is how fast you can set yourself up to move and click your mouse.

Ah, but I never claimed you were anything.

Elessar - calling everyone a fanboy of WoW isn't necessarily fair

I guess I'm not included in "everyone".

calling people blind if they don't acknowledge the difference between older and newer graphic technology is too much?

But nobody said anything to the contrary here. You started it with your comment. Regardless, the graphics are a personal preference. Some may prefer WoW's graphical style and you aren't one to tell them they are wrong. So yes, you did go too far with that, seeing as you threw in an insult to make sure they knew your superiority.

there are some awfully biased WoW AND anti-WAR comments.

There are opinions, they'd only be biased if you knew those people played one game or the other, which you don't. Even so, none of them managed to insult the other camp (excluding the insults towards Jacobs and Kaplan) till you made your comment.

And you can jump to all the conclusions you like about me being a WoW fanboy.

Ah, but I never claimed you were anything. Falsely accusing me of being a WAR Fanboy, doesn't make you a WoW Fanboy. See how that works?

And honestly, calling people blind if they don't acknowledge the difference between older and newer graphic technology is too much? I've really gone too far with that?

Even after reading back, there are some awfully biased WoW AND anti-WAR comments. Which is why I posted in the first place. For the last time, competition and the resulting progression is a good thing. Judging from the response Kaplan and co. has had over the last few weeks, it seems WAR has made more of an impact with them than any other MMO to date. I applaud this, regardless of who or what it is.

Warhammer is a better game now than WoW is 4 years after being released.

WoWs graphic dated? sure...its 4 years old. Of course the funny thing is it still pretty much animates better then all the other MMORPGs out there still. I do like alot of warhammers models, esp the dwarfs. WoW superdeforms their dwarf and gnome models a little bit to much.

Brub... WoW's cartoonish look goes back to warcraft3 which was even more cartoonish and is pretty much everything that warhammer is not.

In hindsight, calling everyone a fanboy of WoW isn't necessarily fair, because I don't have much to base it off of either. In the end, I'm just saying I appreciate that there's some actual competition in this market.

So why didn't you just say that without the fanboy comments and insulting bullshit? You just admitted to being an anti-WoW fanboy, except you brought that fight here yourself. The only comments from WoW players were bringing up the fact that all MMO's learn from one another, which makes Jeff Kaplan's comments rather conceited.

And you can jump to all the conclusions you like about me being a WoW fanboy. I haven't touched WoW in about a year and have no intention of it either.

Open world PvP existed a hell of a long time before WAR came out too. So did the idea of levelling through PvP. I don't know why this douche thinks they did something so original that they can call other people out on it.
