Age of Conan Server Merges Coming

The Age of Conan Forums have word that server merges are in the works for Funcom's MMORPG, saying they will look to get "healthy populations" going on servers both in Europe and North America. The update, by new Game Director Craig 'Silirrion' Morrison, says they are proceeding cautiously to overcome the "complexities" involved, but that the work to make this happen has started. That same update also mentions they are almost ready to put the DirectX 10 edition of the game on the test server. Thanks Gamasutra.

SamuraiSaint if youre happy with AoC good for you. The game didnt engage me enough, it failed to reward me adequately, the broken classes and the missing end game content as well as the non-existant (but still over-hyped) PvP dynamics, sort of ruined it for me. I have left and I havent looked back. The game's graphics sure are pretty, but pretty aint gonna cut it...

I understand about tastes. Some like Fantasy more than SCi-fi. Personally i like SCi-fi.

I mean game mechanics and such i have tested or at leasst played a little bit of a lot of different MMO games. I really think that if AO had been released in 2005 with 2005 level graphics it would probably be pretty competative.

It still has 20K players or there abouts. And pretty much everyone you run into is a mature serious and helpful player.

Servers merges so early on are a very bad sign. I remember reading very positive things about AoC for about a week and then after that everything turned sour. I'm still reading positive things about WAR, though we'll have to see how that does going on.

btw

Would someone actually post what is so bad or wrong with Aoc. like in a list. I wonder what could be so wrong with the game and what is upsetting everyone. I talked to a few players in my area and none of them had installation or startup issues.

The funny thing is... these boards kind of remind me of the AoC boards in a way. Different topics, same kind of attitudes.

How is any other MMO (even Wow) superior or deeper than AO?

Superior? I don't know. That's really a matter of taste, and not many people seem to have a taste for AO.

I still play AO. I play for a couple months then i take a few months off then i get the its for a couple months etc..

I have dabbled in some other mmos but for me personally AO is the best one out there. I dont really see what there is to complain about in that game. It still has decent graphics and you can do all kinds of stuff. Teaming is fun and i still discover new things that i didnt know before about the game.

I Think that once the graphics overhaul gets released it may see a big population jump. IMO the game is so good and so complete that with a new cutting edge graphics engine it practically could be rereleased all over again.

How is any other MMO (even Wow) superior or deeper than AO?

I am serious.

If I had been Funcom, those forums would have been shut down pronto...not because I'm unable to face the truth, but because I'm unable to deal adequately with the lies, baseless accusations, and slander. The way those kids acted on those boards reminded me of nothing so much as the mindless savagery of the kids in Lord of the Flies

You obviously have no idea what you are talking about. Zero. I would even go so far to call you an idiot regarding this subject. Deal with that however you see fit. If it wasnt for the Official forums, my experience with AoC would have been 10000% worse than they have been. Thankfully some of my early issues were quickly resolved thanks to a dedicated FAN BASE. Read that again fan base. Nothing to do with the devs or the absolutely horrific support (read no support). For every childish rant that has nothing to do with reality there were 10 constructive threads that dealt with serious issues that this game had and still has. What did the devs do? They chose to ignore 99% of them and still do their own thing....

Anarchy Online is STILL going, and soon getting a graphics overhaul, I don't think Age of Conan is going anywhere, anytime soon.

The only real major issue I see at this point is there being no official boards for direct intereaction with the team and them being able to better guage tha major issues everyone is concerned about. They should definitely get some official forums up. HUGE mistake not to have them IMO.

There will be no official forums. Mark Jacobs has stated repeatedly his opposition to them. It's the same reason there have never been any official forums for his and Mythic's other game, DAoC.

Official forums do nothing useful, from a developer's point of view, and are on the contrary extremely harmful. They provide a place for every immature, uninformed jerk who has bought the game to congregate and hurl about the most hateful, vitriolic, and idiotic accusations imaginable. For useful, constructive criticism, fan boards are far better. Only people who really care about a game visit the fan boards.

I agree with Jacobs' assessment. The thing that has hurt AoC far beyond any shortcomings in the game itself, is the absolutely demonic frenzy of the "community" of losers populating the American forums (I hear the European boards are calmer, which is one big reason why the devs hang out there instead). I mean, I'm no newcomer to games forums--in fact, I was there for Funcom's own AO launch, which at that time itself set a new standard for hatefulness--but I was shocked at some of the things I read on AoC's forums during AoC's launch. If I had been Funcom, those forums would have been shut down pronto...not because I'm unable to face the truth, but because I'm unable to deal adequately with the lies, baseless accusations, and slander. The way those kids acted on those boards reminded me of nothing so much as the mindless savagery of the kids in Lord of the Flies.

The whole experience has pretty much put me off of MMOGs alogether. I don't want to associate with the kind of stupid trash that plays these games anymore. I understand that not everyone's a bad apple, but there are enough of them out there now to make me not want to bother with the enterprise at all.

That didn't take long.....

The cause of all these evils was the lust for power arising from greed and ambition; and from these passions proceeded the violence of parties once engaged in contention.

Well Xero, that settles it. If your friend is bored, then surely everyone else must be, so hence, ergo, vis-a-vis WAR must throw in the towel! LOL! OMG! WTF!

After server merges, it's, closing time. LoL. Let's just say nobody knows how to do this shit properly like Blizzard. I'll be surprised if WO can last longer. My friend whose hardcore MMO player(no he doesn't play WoW), has said he's already bored to shit of WO and it just came out.

I dunno, WO is a blast! I'm absolutely loving it. Sure it has some issues and problems, but nowhere close to what WoW had at launch, and a lot of the game is way more fun, particulalry as it applies to PvP/RvR.

Maybe because I'm playing on the chaos side, I've also found that the vast majority of people I've been meeting, grouping, questing and RvR'ign with are much more mature, smart, and nice than what you generally deal with in WoW.

As for sub numbers, I picked the server because it was a new low pop server, and since launch it's already gone from low to med to high and now queues at peak times, and most of the other servers are looking damn busy too.

I still like WoW, but I find I'm liking this much more to my very great surprise. The only real major issue I see at this point is there being no official boards for direct intereaction with the team and them being able to better guage tha major issues everyone is concerned about. They should definitely get some official forums up. HUGE mistake not to have them IMO.

Very bad sign to have server merge within 6 months. I suspect we'll see the same for Warhammer in about 6 months as well, maybe as soon as 4 months when the Warcraft kiddies it attracted are all back up to 80 and have fresh content to raid.

It's dangerous to set expectations on an MMO due to launch numbers anymore. WoW has attracted so many people into the MMO genre that there are huge numbers of people willing to try a game for a couple months, who then abandon it and go back home.
