Steam to Host Mods

This week's Steam Marketing message has word that beginning this week, Steam will begin offering modifications, or MODs as they put it. Word is: "The first five MODs to ship on steam will be Age of Chivalry, D.I.P.R.I.P., Insurgency, Synergy, and Zombie Panic. As always, owners of any Source game will be able to download and play all of these MODs for free." Mods hosted on Steam will also use Steamworks for stat tracking and other community integration.

I wonder if they will expand to not only Source Engine mods, but mods for all games featured on Steam.

Hopefully more developers will start implementing Steamworks features, it would streamline the distribution of mods for other game engines at the least. The trouble is that Steamworks is obviously tied to Steam itself, which means developers can't use other services like Direct2Drive, GamersGate, Impulse and so on. Some sort of univeral "packaging" standard for digital distribution would be nice, right now everyone has to make several different versions of their game just to make it available on all services.

Personally I'd just like everything on Steam but that obviously isn't realistic. Steam doesn't even have a refined method of accepting new titles at the moment. Valve has a lot of work ahead of them.
