I agree completly.

Buying a game on day one or even worst, pre-order is asking to encounter all the gzmes problems, Why do people find it hard to wait a few months I don't know.

No problemo, although I quoted the part I responded to.

Still, I'm all for supporting the developer and I like the genre of the Stalker series very much. But at some point there has to be some culpability on the part of those developers who charge good money for a beta. I've never understood those people who cry bloody murder when a game is delayed (Duke Nukem Forever notwithstanding). I far prefer they take an extra three months before going gold to playtest and bug-stomp. That didn't seem to have happened here.

I'm sorry, I thought you where claiming to be the pirate that was reffered to in post 12 " ...among the prior posters who didn't actually buy the game. Pirates still complain... " when you replied in post 20, "...That would be me. I heeded the warnings and didn't get burned. ..." my apoliges. I hope that help your understanding of my thinking (or maybe lack off)

If you like it so much why did you pirate it? That is hardly supporting them to make the game you want to play.

Sorry, who said I pirated the game? That was my quote you used, Kosumo, so I just want to understand your thinking.

Yup, A51Abductee found me out, I am quoting the geekiest, geek in geekdom.

Mmog? No, way. As much as I enjoy the first game and recommend it now, it was a crappy mess for most people, just like CS. It's the very few that don't have serious problems.
They spend WAY too much time tying to please graphic whores and compete with other engines for best graphics forcing them to released a totally buggy crapfest of a game, twice now.
I would be surprised if they could get funding for a mmog, they can't seem to comprehend that game stablity (quests and engine) are more important than making some geek have graphical orgasms.

Did anyone play the new Crysis? What the hell happened there? I beat it in just over 3 hours. Aside from some new environments (which many were shoddily put together, artistically and design-wise), there was absolutely NO new content.

Except for those ridiculous cutscenes of nothingness...

I hope I'm not spoiling it for anyone, but it's not worth a penny so I hope I'm saving someone the cash.

It's also worth noting that, aside from the bugs, the game is far, FAR above par in every area when compared to the first one.
Combat, AI, the environment/weather, armour, weapons, factions and such are a vast improvement. However, the economy is terrible (money is far too hard to acquire given how much you need to spend on stuff, though that can be modded) and the fear factor from the original is missing - the bloodsuckers aren't scary anymore and it's completely missing the AMAZING sewer sections from the original game. It's a real shame because if it had maintained or improved upon the fear factor from the original it would have been an exceptional game. It's a shame the bugs ruined its reputation and garnered such bad reviews as Clear Sky deserves to be played by anyone with even a passing interest in the genre.

I am pretty certain that particular quest is not in the main line of things. You should be able to move on from there without it, unless you're just trying to clear every quest you come across.
Actually it is.

Then again, Oleg from GSC was hinting that they may go down the MMOG road with it. That would please me greatly.
I love STALKER but do I have confidence that they could make a good MMO version of it? No. I'd much rather they went for another Clear Sky - graphical improvements and a significant reworking of the gameplay, this time without the bugs and with a lot of polish. I'm amazed at how much they've done to the engine in just a year, as Crysis Warhead did virtually nothing.

If you guys have read my previous posts on here, you'll know I'm a big proponent of pirating games as a way of trying out the full product before purchase.
I always purchase those I feel deserve it, and as buggy as Clear Sky is, the intent that the developers have in making these games is enough for me to buy them outright. I guess it's worth saying that people have many different reasons for their purchases, as I'm also the kind of guy who won't pay for a game for something as little as having all those fucking advertisements in the intro (Crysis I'm looking at you).
The show-stopping bugs have kind of put a damper on my experience so far, but at the same time I played through Stalker 1 multiple times, so I'm not too crushed. Plus I had low expectations for the quality of the experience out of the box because of their reputation for buggy releases.
If you're looking for a game that oozes atmosphere, look no further. This game is amazing in that regard. Right up there with the old Thief games. It's also worth noting that, aside from the bugs, the game is far, FAR above par in every area when compared to the first one. It definitely feels like the game they intended to make the first time around, and that's saying something I think.

I unfortunately hit a show-stopper bug last night in the Dark Valley, where basically the primary quest to capture the three antennae wouldn't trigger
I am pretty certain that particular quest is not in the main line of things. You should be able to move on from there without it, unless you're just trying to clear every quest you come across.

Fallout 3, anyone?
Ironic when speaking of bug-ridden games. Do you have any memory of the pre-Morrowind Bethesda? ;p

It's damned unfortunate because I like what GSC is trying to do: make a post-apocalyptic game dripping with atmosphere.

If you like it so much why did you pirate it? That is hardly supporting them to make the game you want to play.

Even if it has some problems, to pay for it and support the developer that is making/learning to make/ the games you like is a good thing. If you think that you should only pay for it once it meets your uber dream game standards, the day of seeing that game becomes slimmer and slimmer imho.

26. Re: Clear Stuff Sep 23, 2008, 20:02 Aero

I like it and have largely enjoyed my time with it, but I enjoyed the first game a lot so I am predisposed. I've been relatively lucky concerning bugs so far(I didn't start until the .04 patch was released though), but I have had two BSOD (which I haven't otherwise had in five years, so that's a pretty neat trick right there, particularly in Vista), and I had to revert to a savegame from 20 minutes previous once because a script failed to trigger.

Given that I've probably put 20+ hours in, this isn't bad enough to discourage me, but surely it should never have been released like this. It's funny, before it was released I figured that the biggest benefit to the updated engine would be more stability seeing as how that was SoC's biggest failing. If anything Clear Sky is considerably worse. The new graphics features (particularly the god-rays) are incredibly beautiful, but I would trade them all in for rock-solid stability.

Nevertheless, I'm glad I bought it, but I wouldn't recommend anyone else buy it who isn't a big fan of the series if and until they sort out the stability issues. I hope they're a little more on top of single-player patches than they were with SoC. Most of the patches for SoC were concerned almost entirely with MP, which so far as I can tell, nobody played. Co-op would be pretty slick though, but I can only imagine what a scripting nightmare that would be.

Oh, and yeah, the Far Cry 2 Engine seems right up Stalker's alley, probably no chance of that though, which is a shame. Let's hope that one isn't so big a mess.

I guess no one has any ideas on why the servers aren't showing up in my server browser eh?

re Clear Sky - Despite some annoying bugs its still far better than most of the garbage out there. The combat AI is still dodgy but it can surprise the hell out of you too. I also like the idea that you have to work for the artifacts now instead of seeing them lying around everywhere. This may sound blasphemous but I think the IP would benefit by getting picked up by a major American publisher that would do the game properly (Ubisoft Montreal using FarCry 2 tech comes to mind).

Then again, Oleg from GSC was hinting that they may go down the MMOG road with it. That would please me greatly.

why did they even bother with multiplayer?
It doesn't take much effort to make and there are lots of people that value it. It's like Bioshock - it was a strong singleplayer game but there were still plenty of people that wanted multiplayer as well.

I've been reading that this game has limited activation DRM system called "tags", if that's true I wonder why this game hasn't been targeted for termination by Amazon reviewers.

That would be Tages and it's a DRM scheme in addition to Steam's existing DRM. SecureROM is used on North American retail CDs and StarForce is used on CDs sold everywhere else. Hooray for PC gaming in the 21st Century! Woot woot!

Don't worry, I'm sure there is at least one person among the prior posters who didn't actually buy the game.

That would be me. I heeded the warnings and didn't get burned. Yay for me.

I hang around the GSC and Steam forums to check up on the progress of Clear Sky and it appears the bug/crash situation is far, far, far worse this time around. I always thought you were supposed to get better each time you do something. It's damned unfortunate because I like what GSC is trying to do: make a post-apocalyptic game dripping with atmosphere.

Fallout 3, anyone?
