On Spore Piracy

Spore's Piracy Problem on Forbes is one of those forays into trying to evaluate the extent of game piracy, in this case for Spore, by looking at peer-to-peer statistics. This is particularly interesting in light of the controversy over Spore's digital rights management, which is upsetting many gamers in order to theoretically curb piracy, but in spite of anti-piracy measures described by some as draconian, the game is apparently getting even more action on bit torrent than one might expect according to Big Champagne, a firm that analyzes such activity. The article indicates a popular sentiment among those pirating the game is that they are protesting the DRM in the game, and it also quotes Brad Wardell on how Stardock has managed to protect its intellectual property without pissing off its user-base. Thanks nin.

Save me the outrage. Am I the only one that thinks the majority of the people crying are really upset they cant steal the game online?

And dont give me the innocent crap. There has been over 500,000 downloads of a cracked spore version on torrent. Most people upset here probably allready downloaded the cracked version.

Wow... are you really THAT fuckin stupid?

Crying cuz they can't steal the game online, yet the "DRM free" torrent was available before it hit the stores???

Access to the pirated version has nothing to do with it.

It's the legit customers (and potential 'want to be legit customers') that are getting fucked in the ass by this ridiculous 'copy protection'. 3 installs forever? No clearing of an "install count" if you uninstall?

Wake the fuck up, moron.

~NO company DICTATES what I can or can't install on MY machine. (Blacklisting protection avoided)

~NO company DICTATES I have to install software on MY machine that constantly calls 'mommy' and potentially invades MY privacy. (Phone-home-ware protection avoided)

~NO company DICTATES how many times I can or can't re-install software I purchased on MY machine. (DRM install limit protection avoided)

~NO company has the right to infest MY machine with a form of malware that alters the way data is accessed (via a kernel mode driver) than the normal operation of the operating system, or interferes with the normal performance of the machine. (Rootkit copy protection avoided)

I DO NOT SURRENDER CONTROL OF MY MACHINE TO ANY COMPANY.

If they want control... they can buy my hardware, my annual upgrades, and my internet connection. I'd be happy to pay $50 for their game and give the full control of what I can access with the machine they bought for me.
