This is an interesting point that I hadn't really considered - that a person's introduction to the world of software piracy might come from a desire to get their legally-purchased software to work without hassles. My feeling is that this creates more pirates than any other single factor. The first time I visited a 'No CD' crack site (megagames.com) was when it was determined the copy protection in Morrowind was causing up to a 20% reduction in performance. My FPS jumped up considerably. The first time I visited a torrent site was when Painkiller wouldn't install on my PC because the copy protection had decided it didn't like one or more of the legally purchased software programs on my hard drive.
Once I discovered the joys of no cd cracks, I downloaded one for every game in my library (over 200 and counting). I HATE having to have a CD or DVD in the drive to play a game that is already on my hard drive.
