how is the peripheral hardware support for vmware on the mac? i want to use vmware to enable me to use an old image setter in vista but what i have found so far is that hardware drivers have to be installed on the host in order for the virtual machine to recognize it. kinda weird for vmware to be advertised as a solution for testing hardware if the test has to be done on the host in addition to the virtual machine.
You shouldn't have to install any drivers on the Host OS.
All you need to do is install the guest OS, and then once you boot the guest OS, install "VMWare tools"... which is the virtual machine drivers to your host hardware, and also lets you move the mouse between the guest os and host desktop seamlessly... and also lets you drag and drop files seamlessly between the desktops.
Once "VMWare Tools" is installed... and the guest desktop has focus... anything you plug in to usb, or cd media, or anything should look native to the guest OS. So drivers for your old image setter should only need to be installed on the guest OS.
If the issue is specific to "Vista being the host (and say, XP being the guest)"... that may be a Vista issue due to the "driver model changes" or a VMWare specific issue for Vista.
As for OSX as the Host and XP as the guest... I've never had to install extra drivers on OSX to get something working in XP.
"Unity" (A feature in Fusion only... but they're doing it for Linux soon), lets you drag the guest icons on to the OSX dock, hide the guest desktop, and launch the guest apps directly from the dock as if they were native applications (and only that application window shows up on the host desktop). Pretty cool stuff.
