However, I would caution at overstating the "loss". We lose many times more lives every year just to car accidents. And people all over the world are dying in droves from essentially being poor.

While you are correct that we lose many more lives every year to car accidents, the implication that our loss has been overstated seems to rest on an assumption that numbers are all that matter. The significance of the "loss" on 9/11 is due to the nature of the loss, not the size of the loss. In that context, it's simply not possible to overstate it.

(Hope you don't feel blasted, though.)

Hooray, happy 9/11 everybody! We should exchange gifts today or something...

(I'll probably get blased for that, but oh well...)

No worries getting blasted from me ( ), and I actually understand what you're saying. It's just (IMHO) human nature to look at something that happens directly to one's self / own community / country / etc. with a much stronger reaction because of lack of detachment in terms of time or place; rather, it's much easier to relate an incident of that sort (car accidents, pandemic disease, and so on) when it happens to you, as opposed to the admittedly terrible happenings that occur elsewhere, thousands of miles away.

Not meaning to lessen the tragedy of any of those situations, locally or globally,

Without a doubt, a very dark day in history. A crime of the highest order.

My first day working on university campus that day was cut short, for obvious reasons. It was quite surreal.

I'd ask "Why/how did this happen?" but I'm concerned that fringe-conspiracy theorists would come out of the woodwork.

Regardless, a sad day in US history, and for those familes and friends of lives lost.

Although I am not American, I grieve for all victims of 9-11 (the people in the "Twin Towers" and in the planes).

So many people died that day. So many families lost their kids, parents, brothers, sisters. It happened then, but the wound is still there today.

We've seen it, some were there that day, others saw it on tv. But I couldn't understand what I saw. I looked at the pictures, but I couldn't comprehend it. I still can't.

The 2008 Sichuan earthquake, or "Great Sichuan Earthquake", occurred on May 12, 2008 in Sichuan province of China. Official figures (as of July 21, 2008) state that 69,197 are confirmed dead, including 68,636 in Sichuan province, and 374,176 injured, with 18,222 listed as missing. The earthquake left about 4.8 million people homeless, though the number could be as high as 11 million.

Even though I live 4.000 miles from New York, this day has a very special place in my heart. On that morning, I was on a flight from Frankfurt to Dallas to work with Gearbox when all of a sudden (while approaching the US airspace, which had already been closed) we were forced to take a sharp turn and land in Newfoundland. What unfolded then were the most heartwarming days of my entire life, when the 10.000 people of small town Gander overwhelmed around 8.000 stranded airplane passengers with their hospitality. If anyone's interested in the full story, most of it can be found at http://www.snopes.com/rumors/gander.asp. It shows how the saddest moments can bring out the best in mankind.

Very early update. I hate this day. It makes me remember the worst day of my life. I'd just as soon forget it. The world has changed in some ways since then, and in other ways it's as if nothing ever happened.

Condolences to all of the families who suffered a loss on that terrible day.
