Anyone got any recommendations on stuff to look out for?

Bionic Commando Rearmed! Super, super fun 2D scroller remake of the original NES game.

It also has the highest rating on PC; even beating out Mass Effect...

$15 download.

31. THE disapointment of 08 Sep 5, 2008, 10:01 BrutalDeluxe

Mind-shattering disappointment! I'm a 'harcore' game and my wife is a 'casual' gamer - we both hated the game. My wife in particular, who (despite being their target market) didn't find it interesting one bit.

The game is a 8h yawner - the same 4 actions over and over and over and over again. Only the first phase, top down 'flow' clone is vaguely fun - but you can pick shareware from bigfish games or popcap that 'do' this genre a lot better.

Incredible disappointment here for sure.

Casual gamers will not love it: one play through and you've "seen" the game.
And a hardcore gamer's gonna love that? Ok...

Right now discussion about Spore is a big hardcore gamer crybaby affair because it's not the game they imagined it'd be.
Fine with me. I "imagined" it to be...wait for it...a big piece of shit. And hey, it is! So no surprise there.
Most of the complanits people have about Spore are due to their own unrealistic expectations on the game.
Since I didn't have "unrealistic expectations" does that mean I can't complain? I think I will anyway. Even though this game SUCKS I hope that it sells a gazillion copies so we can get 65 expansion packs for it, and 43 uninspired clone games. Here's to hoping...

Wow your guys comments are negative and yet so far the aggregate review sites show that this game in the mid 80's so far. This is why we need a demo (don't be sarcastic and say that the creature creator is the demo). I'm confused. I don't want to shell out 50 bucks for a shallow game that I will drop after a few hours and kick myself in the face for shelling out 50 bucks... If this is a simplistic casual game it does not seem very appealing...

You can find many middling reviews for even games like Hellgate:London which was a buggy and godawful mess. Reviews are meaningless and cannot be trusted these days. The best thing I can say about them is to find one reviewer who seems to share your taste in games and try to go with what he/she says.

Verno: I do. It's called The Witcher Enhanced Edition.

I already played The Witcher and unless they're overhauling the entire combat system then I'm uninterested in the game. Everything about that game was great but the combat system seems like it was made by a chimp and really ruined the game for me.

Anyways, I just offered my opinion on the game as a retail owner of it so that others could make an informed purchase decision. If you want a simplistic game that's fun for a short period of time then by all means go crazy. Personally I was expecting a lot more complexity to prolong the game and I don't think that's unrealistic given that a lot of the press about the game made it seem like it would have something to offer to both casual and hardcore gamers. Not to mention it's been in development since what, 2003?

With SPORE, we might have reached the nadir of dumbed-down gaming. It is very polished but utterly devoid of depth.

Casual gamers will not love it: one play through and you've "seen" the game.

Right now discussion about Spore is a big hardcore gamer crybaby affair because it's not the game they imagined it'd be.

I think the major discussion is about what market this is supposed to be tapping. The Sims worked because it was a virtual dollhouse, which tapped into an existing market. What market is this aimed at? The degree of irrelevance of creature design means it won't appeal to people who like that sort of thing, the degree of simplicity means it won't appeal to people who like the RTS elements... The military aspects will turn off carebear types. The lack of differentiating replayability means it won't appeal to those who enjoy taking different paths through.

In the end, what I think it comes down to is the fact that none of the mini-games are sufficient on their own to entice people to play, and yet the mini-games as a collection don't "gel" well enough to make for a compelling experience. I don't see this game having the level of success (or even close to it) that The Sims have had, which is what EA is banking on. While I won't deny there are people who will find this game fun, I think that number won't be exceptionally high, and certainly won't last.

Most of the complanits people have about Spore are due to their own unrealistic expectations on the game.

Given the sheer amount of hype surrounding the game, unrealistic expectations of the game are bound to pop up. However, I question the application of that term in this context. Spore has been in development for many years. Is it not realistic to think that they could have fleshed out the different gameplay modes a bit more and offered some more depth for the less casual players?

I certainly don't think that having high expectations is a bad thing, especially if the expectations are based off of a bar that has already been set. If people don't have high expectations, they buy such drivel as Halo and Gears of War, which inevitably lowers the bar on all the games that follow. Design is dictated by the market, after all.

While you may enjoy Spore, I don't think you should insult those who think it should be a lot better.

You realize that people have different definitions of "fun," right?

That's an amazing revelation. I wonder how many people whining realise that? Right now discussion about Spore is a big hardcore gamer crybaby affair because it's not the game they imagined it'd be. As for what it is- it's quite cool. But hey, let's all have a whine because it's not something it's not.

3 install limit kills it out the gate. I got fucked with Mass Effect PC (another EA game), fool me once shame on you, fool me twice shame on me.

I also doubt uninstalling the game will give you back an activation. MEPC doesn't. Even after like 19 threads of 10 pages each on Bioware's forums. Look in the "Off Topic" forum, where Bioware/EA pushed off and hid all DRM related posts.

SPORE will make a good $10-12 dollar download. Like a souped-up Dinner Dash with better graphics. There is style and flair in the graphics, and the simplistic gameplay is great for a quick game here and there, like Dinner Dash or Peggle.

@Reactor: I don't think it's their fault that the game gets tedius and boring after only a couple hours and that they have something to say about it. They did in fact purchase the game and were dissapointed.
What are they supposed to do, sit back and patronize themselves, convinced that it's still fun?

The idea of a game being allowed to be what it is (simple, repetitive, whatever) and still remain fun just doesn't seem like a concept gamers can grasp these days (amongst other things).

You realize that people have different definitions of "fun," right? To many, a simple and repetitive game just isn't fun. It really irritates me when people say things like "Whatever, I don't care that the game is shallow, dumbed-down, tedious, generic and uninspired! All I care about is fun!"
