Ubisoft: Europe Our Biggest Territory

GamesIndustry.biz excerpts some quotes from its full interview with Yves Guillemot where the Ubisoft boss says that Europe has surpassed the US as the largest territory for the game publisher: "So for Ubisoft turnover Europe is actually more important than the US now, and by more than 5 percent. It's become a very strong market for us." He goes on to explain this has something to do with accessibility and loving to play: "I think there are lots of customers that want to play - because in Europe we love to play - the only problem we had was that the games were becoming more and more difficult to play. Now that there's more accessibility, some accessories that are helping people to have fun, I think this market has no limit in the growth it can have if we can make sure that the people that are coming in are staying."

We constantly release games later in Europe than we do in the US. Because the European market is bigger. Here at Ubisoft, everything we do : Makes Sense!

Also, in the US we just don't love to play. Only in Europe do people love to play.

Please, French Guy, give us more of your insightful bullshit.

At least Europe has been taking chances as of late with their games while American companies (EA in particular) play it safe by churning out the same shit over and over.

This isn't about the US vs. Europe, its about games and companies willing to stick out their necks on a few risky ideas!

Maybe Europe hasn't figured out how badly they effed up the Rainbow series yet.

Maybe the games were just more difficult to play because of all the freaking bugs.

Double Agent was sure difficult to play. Impossible, actually...

This is a really strange news article. Europe is bigger than the US by 5%? So what? Are they changing the business strategy because of that? I think they are:

because in Europe we love to play - the only problem we had was that the games were becoming more and more difficult to play.

This sounds like Ubisoft slyly excusing themselves for their continual "dumbing down" of their titles. Sounds like a backhanded slap to European gamers.

If Europe is a larger market, does that mean publishers will start focusing on the PC again? If that's the case, I'm all for it. Screw the U.S. economy, I want good games.

I just want to bring this issue to people's attention, though I admit I do sound a bit like a broken record. It just really annoys me, especially when they produce some great games. Virtually everyone I know buys their games online anyway (via stores like Amazon / Play) so why we should have to wait days for a game to arrive when we can have it immediately (minus the download time)?

You're not as bad as Jerykk screaming about consolization or kxmode about hard drive space requirements, so dont feel too bad.

Honestly, it could be anything. From legal trickiness, existing contracts with standard retailers, and so forth. Theres obviously something keeping them from being able to Steam more stuff to Europeans beyond them just not wanting to. Theres nothing for them to lose.

If you don't like where gaming is heading, stop giving your money to the people who are taking it in that direction.

Don't confuse me joking about it to not agreeing with it.

There could be a dozen reasons why...but maybe Ubisoft has strict retail agreements that prevent them from using Steam in Europe. Only they know.

Well, it's true...

You don't proclaim a territory as being your greatest cash cow and simultaneously refuse to sell your products there through a popular channel...

To give an analogy that the American layman will get, it's like EA proclaiming the US as the largest market for its cash-cow American wearing-padded-uniforms-and-carry-the-ball games and then refusing to sell them in major high-street retailers, instead pumping them out through their useless EA Download service...
Retail in the EU is dying on its arse, so why not go where the money actually is?

So Europe is more important than the US and yet their games still aren't available here on Steam? There wasn't even any mention of Steam or digital distribution.

I guess my boycott will have to continue then. Fuck Ubisoft.
