Team Fortress 2 Arena Mode

Monday's Installment in Team Fortress 2 - A Heavy Update may have taken all day, but it is extra-heavy, offering details on Arena Mode, a new game type that will come along with the upcoming Heavy class update for the teamplay shooter. The mode will play on five maps to start, altered versions of Well, Granary, and Badlands, and two new maps, Lumberyard and Ravine, and here's word on Arena Mode:

NO TIME FOR CRYING!
TF2 Arena keeps the class diversity of Team Fortress 2 while focusing goals around combat between two teams. Where other game modes lean towards a broad overall strategy for the team over a number of lives, Arena concentrates on the specific tactical choices the teams make in a single fight.

Arena features smaller maps that play out in shorter periods of time. The round ends once one team has no players left in the arena, or when the central capture point has unlocked and been captured. Rounds tend to be very fast and highly competitive, with an emphasis on your team’s class makeup and your plan to counter the opposing team’s class choices. Arena mode is great for smaller matches of three vs. three players, while still comfortably supporting huge knockdown twelve-on-twelve brawls.

ARENA CLASS STRATEGIES
Health pick-ups are limited in TF2 Arena (some levels don’t have any Health packs at all) so being careful is a good strategy for any class. As well, with so little health available, having a Medic or a Health dispenser-building Engineer on your team can be a crucial element to success. With their reconnaissance abilities, the Scout and Spy play a far more vital role in Arena than in other game modes. Knowing the location of the enemy team can often mean the difference between a win and a loss. The Soldier and Demoman will find many areas in Arena specifically designed for them to get a vertical advantage. Traditional Heavy/Medic pairings will still be highly useful as the anchor to a good Arena team. However, commit too far in this direction and the enemy can quickly overwhelm you with Snipers and Spies. In Arena, water is as scarce as Health. This makes the Pyro a much deadlier class, as any enemy player he sets on fire with his flamethrower or flare gun will be unable to put out the flames. Igniting enemies quickly, then retreating to safety, can be an effective strategy for the Pyro.

One could argue that they significantly slowed the game down (compared to QWTF) in order to accommodate gamepads...

But one would then argue that TFC featured these same significant slowdowns, in a time when the N64 and PSX were king.

TF has been "dumbed down" ever since TFC-- fans of QWTF have had to look to mods like Weapons Factory and Q3F in order to get their Fortress-fix.

Man, Sudden Death vanished when it became optional because pubs hate playing Counterstrike. Now, they've gone and done this.

Achievements are all the rage these days and yes, the unlocks are controversial, but they don't actually have anything to do with making the game worse so it works better on the Xbox.

Try again.

Wolfenstein Enemy Territory has consistently slightly below the average amount of players of TF2 online at any point to this day. It's rather under the radar, compared to the amount of hype that TF2 got when it was released originally.

Because it's CS, and that means overnight all of the servers will end up running it as it becomes more popular than Jesus himself.

Oh gimme a break, there will always be plenty of servers in good ping range with enough players in all game modes given how many people play this game.

What is it with so many PC gamers who get starry eyed at Valve multiplayer gaming? CS is like the McDonalds and TF2 is Wendy's.
And what other multiplayer games are out there that are actually worth playing? DODSource is pretty decent but in a similar vein. There's also UT3, ET:QW and BF2142, though none of them even come close. TF2 and CS are more like Intel and AMD - they might not be perfect but you have little choice other than to use them.

NEway, I really don't know whether I'll like this new Arena mode. I usually play on InstantRespawn servers on a handful of maps (2Fort, Dustbowl, Turbine). If I'm going to being sitting around waiting for the end of a round then I think I'll be sticking to my current routine. I do agree with the sentiment that Valve is trying too hard to reinvent the game and moving away from the classic formula of 2Fort (actually improved in TF2), Rock2 (missing) and Well (butchered). The only Capture Point map I actually enjoy is Dustbowl. Goldrush is enjoyable, though I don't play it too often (I really should). I still love the game but it could be so much better.

PS - The new environment looks stunning. The mountains and trees still keep with the TF2 style but give it some MUCH needed diversity - I was getting fed up with all maps looking like a desert.

Been playing TF2 for hundreds of hours and hundreds of more hours to come. Whiners can take it or leave it. To me it's the best thing since Tribes 1 and QWTF.

Just another game type that I will enjoy even less than the current TF2. The Fortress Forever mod is truer to the TF legacy and where I'll be.

TF2 makes better chicken nuggets.

I don't think this will really hurt anything. At least they're giving more options.

One of the biggest problems with this game is the lack of options for map-makers. TF1 and TFC had way more flexibility than TF2 does in that arena(no pun intended...well, maybe a hair intended).

Besides, this isn't nearly as lame as the ridiculous amount of servers that play the surf maps.

I think this arena mode is e-sport inspired. It would work really well in e-sport since being killed would have a significant impact on chances of your team winning.

I agree it is a c.s. like mode. But I like a little variety. I understand that there are people who don't like this new mode. But that's the beauty of having so many populated tf2 servers that you can get the type of server you want because there will be server admins who agree with you.

I'm not an ADHD pubber, but I also don't play games to sit around for minutes at a time doing nothing. TF2's respawn timer is agonizingly long as is, I don't have any real intention of playing something even longer.
There might be one or two Counter-Strike fans that could be used to support the opposite view. CS had you waiting up to 3 minutes if you got nailed at the beginning of a round. From what I've heard, CS still managed to do ok....

If you knew anything about anything, you would know that TF2 is anything but Valve's baby, it originally started as TF a MOD for Quake 1 *gasp*! Some time after that a mod for Half-Life was released "Team-Fortress Classic" which proved to be immensely popular, and the entire mod team was hired by Valve to do a full blown sequel.

Im about 99% sure that the Valve team that did their great single player games had very little to do with TF2.

I think this is more inspired by "Well all the pubs run around, ignore the objective, and just want to team death match anyway. So lets just give them a team death match mode." The only problem is they are forgetting a huge chunk of their player base can't wait 10 seconds to respawn. A full minute for a round to end will have them screaming bloody murder.

I hope this isn't inspired by World of Warcraft's arena feature, which is also heavily reliant on what classes are used in each team. WoW's arena rubbish is a complete waste of time and very dependent on your team makeup and chance. (Quite how it became an e-sport is beyond me)

I dub arena: team counter fortress strike 2

I wont be bothering with arena maps but at least they are adding content. Not bad to say I dont pay a monthly sub.

I was a die hard quake TF and then TFC but I love TF2. I still has the gameplay (and I can see "foot shots" coming back soon for the sniper!)
