Blizzard on Microtransactions and Consoles

What Activision Can And Can't Change About Blizzard on Kotaku is a Q&A with World of Warcraft game director Jeffrey Kaplan about how the formation of Activision Blizzard may influence the future of the company (thanks nin). A couple of interesting topics are covered, including the possibility that changes could be made to how World of Warcraft is monetized, something they are not eager to do, but that Kaplan admits is within Activision Blizzard's powers. A similar point is made about the possibility that microtransactions could be part of the Diablo III landscape, as D3 lead designer Jay Wilson says, "I think we always look to make the game we want to make, and then figure out the kind of financial model that works with that game." Perhaps most interesting, though, is Kaplan's comment about consoles in speaking of Activision's strengths: "They have a lot of expertise in the console area, where we're very-headed in addition to PC and online."

Blizzard is like the eccentric/genius kid in class. Vivendi is his douchy father and Activision is the kid who eats crayons.

Your analogy is flawed, Activision is the kid who eats crayons alright. Blizzard is the Crayons.

Your saying Activision is an artard cannibalist. That's some disturbing imagery there mate.

When will these boneheads learn that North American gamers donn't like to be nickled and dimed? Someone needs to burn Activision to the ground. They're insidious and will destroy Blizzard in the end. Blizzard really needs to divest itself of everyone else and be it's own publisher and developer.

Well Bobby Kottick is famous for talking out of his ass, how he ever got to be in charge of the biggest game publishing company is anybodys guess.

I for one am convinced its through extortion, blackmail and murder.

Anyway you put it, Blizzard/Activision is bad for us gamers in the end. There is no merger that doesnt end up fucking over its loyal customer base in the end.

If you go all the way back to pre-WOW days, there was always a big concern of Vivendi selling the games division (including Blizzard) which adds lots of uncertainty.

The only time Blizzard has had a rough patch internally was when Vivendi tried to shake things up with the possibility of selling them. The end result of this? Among many things is the closure of Blizzard North and recently, Hellgate.

What is a bit deceiving about the whole Activision Blizzard is that Blizzard really had no control over it. If you go all the way back to pre-WOW days, there was always a big concern of Vivendi selling the games division (including Blizzard) which adds lots of uncertainty.

Now, Vivendi agreed to combine forces. Blizzard really has no control over it, and what you hear from blizzard could be considered marketing spin. This is what happens when youre dependant on your parent company to support the company during all the R&D (development time).

Now with wow, it really comes down to how much money Blizzard has agreed to pay Vivendi on all the transactions. That 75+ million they make a month most likely dosnt go sit in Blizzards pocket. Im sure Vivendi takes their percentage.

Anyway, it should be interesting to see what happens, but I kind of feel its going to be impossible for Blizzard to remain what it was. Whether its good or bad, yet to be scene.

Activision would be kicking itself in the nuts if they switched to micro-transactions. It works in asia, but every single game that has gone with it in the US has all but fallen apart.

Diablo III is actually the main PC game I'm looking forward to. Hopefully they don't ruin it before it even starts.

I wouldn't care if the micro-transactions came in the form of cosmetic changes, or other things that have no bearing on game play.

I think it'd be terrible if someone could buy a sword of mega awesome doomrage, level up your character by maxing out your credit card!

If they end up charging D3 players for content then I have to wonder where the fuck is all this money they are making off WoW going to?

I hope this is just talk. Blizzard isn't stupid enough to implement microtransactions in Diablo 3.

I sure hope not. I'm having flashbacks to Hellgate as I type this...
