I think this is my favorite screen yet: http://www.3000ad.com/pics/gcES/08-02-20/PHOTO009.PNG

At first I thought my LCD monitor was melting from the inside... then I realized it was supposed to look like that.

"Game developers are just human beings who happen to make games for a living. If you want to hold us up to higher standards of conduct, then go ahead
...but don't be surprised if we don't uphold them."

I love how he throws in that made-up quote to make himself look important. Like if John Carmack, Gabe Newell, Hideo Kojima, and Shigeru Miyamoto were going to have a roundtable discussion on game design, and they needed one more... would Derek's name come up?

The link works fine for me, and I'm running Firefox 3.01

I get a blank screen in 3.0...

See that's the thing about Dr. Smart. If your games are good, people will find out about them (and play them), if the graphics are good people will say so, if neither is true then you have only one recourse: tell people it's true. Even if it isn't. Even if your games have some of the shittiest gameplay and ugliest graphics known to mankind.

But none of this matters to Dr. Smart. You fucking ingrates are far too below him to understand the greatness of his games. I mean, just look at the size of his bulbous skull. How can you even comprehend the things he knows and sees? For fuck's sake, his games actually extend into the 4th dimension, bridge time and space, and they're so fucking awesome they write themselves. That's right motherfuckers. The 4th dimension. We can only see 3 of them. He sees a whole fucking extra dimension than the rest of us. We're lucky to even be able to read his words, let alone buy his games.

@dsmart: That link you posted doesn't work in Firefox (the page loads but no thumbnails are displayed) - I have to load up IE or Opera to view it.
The link works fine for me, and I'm running Firefox 3.01. Of course, the pictures are nothing to phone home about, so it doesn't matter much.

I will say this for Derek Smart - his games look good for indie games. Compared with commercial games though (even cross-platform ones like Star Trek Online), they look pretty outdated.

@dsmart: That link you posted doesn't work in Firefox (the page loads but no thumbnails are displayed) - I have to load up IE or Opera to view it. And yes, I was being absolutely serious... Galactic Command looks absolutely appalling and incredibly dated; simply posting a link to more screenshots won't change that.

Fortunately I am not alone in my opinion and I have no desire to discuss this any further with you.

Someone should make an FPS based on classic Star Trek: Kirk, McCoy, Scotty, mini-skirts, go-go boots, etc.

Dont listen to Derek Smart, he thrives on pissing people off. yes his game(s) were once pretty fun to play for a few hours back in the late 90s, but now, his games are washed-out and out of date. he knows it too. I dont know why he hasnt spent some of his money to improve on the graphics engine. STO has a ways to go, but the idea is solid. I look forward to the upcoming improvements.

With all your fancy talk about technology you would think you would have published a game that people would know and have played.

In reality your game (I call all your iterations of the same game a game) hasn't sold for shit and flat out sucks.

Ambition wise you get an A+ for effort, execution..... F-

Given just how clueless that post proves that you are, I won't say anymore than to just quote it in its entirety. Just for giggles.

Okay, I'll do this for the sake of completeness. Visuals are subjective to a degree but I think STO stands clearly above the rest.

Thats just funny, in a bizarre sort of way. No way in hell you're serious.

dsmart, with the amount of replies I've read coming from you that try to elevate your games in one way or another, one would think your games would be suffering as a result.

MMO's are for people who avoid reality.... can't say I blame them though, reality sucks.

Those STO shots look better than these?
http://www.3000ad.com/pics/gcES/08-02-20/index.html

the sto pics definitely look better than those. the models seem more fluid and the lighting is more appropriate. not to mention the resolution looks higher and tighter.

not to say that your game is worse or better than theirs, but better looking seems like a long shot.

I think the problem with the STO space shots (specifically the one you linked) is the scale. The scale just looks really weird with that ship on the right and the planet in the background.

Okay, I'll do this for the sake of completeness. Visuals are subjective to a degree but I think STO stands clearly above the rest.

First we have Star Trek Online:
http://img410.imageshack.us/img410/6792/startrekonlineab8.jpg
Next we have Precusors, a game I had never heard of before. It's not bad but I still don't think it looks as good:
http://img410.imageshack.us/img410/7620/precursorsyz5.jpg
Then we have Dark Horizon, which I simply don't find at all appealing:
http://img144.imageshack.us/img144/3391/darkhorizonvg4.jpg
A suggestion I can understand is Black Prophecy, which does indeed look impressive. However, it doesn't make STO "horrible", which was the assertion:
http://img519.imageshack.us/img519/3374/blackprophecyrh4.jpg
And finally Galactic Command: Echo Squad, which to me looks simply disgraceful:
http://img388.imageshack.us/img388/6295/galacticcommandwu9.jpg

I really don't know how you can see STO as "horrible" and consider Galactic Command better - that's absolutely laughable. Ha ha. Funny. Ha ha. You were joking, right?

My games - on the other hand - yeah, they render entire worlds, in real time, all the time, regardless of where you are. And thats based on tech I pioneered back in the late eighties.
Yeah, it looks like it's from the eighties. Not only that but is really doesn't matter what the technology is doing is the game looks terrible. It might be the most impressive engine from a technical standpoint but if the graphics look like a bunch of lepers running around in a paint factory then I'm not interested.

Obviously we need to see a lot more of Star Trek Online before we can make an accurate assessment but I like the graphic style - it's distinctive, quite fresh and has potential. I think the movie they're launching soon will answer a lot more. The game may very well turn out to be shit - and if it is I'll be the first to say so - but I don't think it's fair to write it off yet, particularly not based on the competition.

That's not incredibly impressive when your engine only needs to render 3 polygon and a texture.
