Mythos Beta Closes

Eurogamer has word that the beta testing for Mythos shut down on Friday, and while all the intrigue surrounding developer Flagship (story) might suggest otherwise, the post on the Mythos Website optimistically calls this a "hiatus." Here goes:

We, the ancient elders of Uld are issuing this warning to all citizens and travelers. Hurry! The great darkness that once plagued Uld is returning. Everyone is ordered to close down their shops and prepare. We predict the when night is at its peak the darkness will arrive. The ancient elders of Uld will be leaving immediately in order to preserve the lore of this wonderful world. Citizens please prepare thyself and know that the elders will be back from their travels some day.

We regretfully announce that on Friday, July 18, 2008 at 11:59 CST the world of Uld known as Mythos will be going on hiatus. On behalf of all of the Devs and Community team we want to thank you to everyone for their support and assistance with Mythos Alpha and Beta testing and we hope to see you soon.

i was in the beta, and i had something like 20 beta keys to give out to friends. i tried rl friends, internet friends, non-friend friends, and i couldnt find any takers. i wasnt very impressed with the game, but i played very early in the beta. i saw emails come thru a few times saying there was a large content update, or a reworking of certain systems, but i never logged back in.

edit: too many commas

Worst thing these ex-Blizzard employees could have ever done. Make a company that could try remaking Blizzard games. Stupid, just stupid. Granted Hellgate London doesn't seem like a Blizzard game, think of WoW meets Diablo meets Starcraft and you got Hellgate London. Too bad they aren't Blizzard and thus, once again, another company trying to compete with them goes down. Nobody will make do with imitators that can't do what makes Blizzard games what they are.

Probably one of the more bizarre press releases I've seen lately.

Oh well, at least they didn't use the words "Award winning!" in there anywhere.

Don't forget "Critically Acclaimed!" and "Highly Anticipated!".

Marketers need a new vocabulary.

Mythos wasn't bad. Very cartoonish and can be fun. I prefer Diablo series.

eh, mythos was just standard hack n slash 'rpg'. everything was identical except that it had a very kiddy/cartoon/happy vibe too it. which i gather was intentional to appeal to more people. the world of the game was very generic also. it was all just very 'standard'.

im not trying to trash talk the game, ive just been in the 'beta' for a long time and there was never anything special about it.

it was never really a beta also. they basically allowed us to test it as they were creating the game.

I wonder if Bill "The Big Sushi" Roper uses crayons to sign his name on contract documents.

So in hindsight it sounds like it would have been better for them if they focused on and released Mythos before doing anything else.

Disappointing news. Mythos, in extreme contrast to HGL, was actually a fun game.

They're awfully glib, considering that they're basically announcing the death of their company.

I wonder if they were hoping Hellgate would tank and they would rely on their free MMORPG to bring in money.

Ooops.
