Flagship Shake-up - Hellgate Takeover Attempt?

First the confirmed story: Layoffs Confirmed At Hellgate Developer Flagship on Gamasutra has word that a Flagship rep has confirmed that "staff at both the Flagship development team as well as online services subsidiary Ping0 were let go." They also report contact from "source close to Flagship" that the company has been "going through internal turbulence." Now for the part that's less clear, in what may or may not be related news: Hellgate Guru has a report based on a translation of a Korean news story saying that Korean operator of Hellgate: London, HanbitSoft, claims co-ownership of the Intellectual Properly for the game, and is looking to take full control of the IP to "properly manage and develop Hellgate: London into a good game with proper content." Their report quotes HanbitSoft's statement on their reasoning: "It is hard for us to accept Flagship Studios’ requests for continued support in capital and funding any longer and because Flagship was being difficult." They also have a response to the story from Flagship Studios calling the story an "outright lie," except they don't appear to be refuting the accuracy of the Korean news story, but rather HanbitSoft's rights to take over the IP, seemingly indicating that such an attempt may actually be underway. According to Flagship:

This story is an outright lie. We have no idea where they are getting their information from and have asked legal counsel to pursue the issue. We are mystified by Hanbitsoft’s conclusions and any attempt to take over the IP will be met with a strong and swift response, to “illegally take over the IP”. All right title and interest in Hellgate; London resides in Flagship Financing, LLC a wholly-owned subsidiary of Flagship Studios. We are outraged that Hanbitsoft would attempt to completely tarnish the reputation of its most vital developer. Hanbitsoft’s new management clearly does not understand the terms of its relationship with Flagship.

Looks like dark days ahead for Hellgate: London players. Though nothing is certain until the official word and IP ownership is decided if a legal battle ends up coming into play.

Lol @ the removal of Subscription management... They must not want more people jumping ship at the every-other-day bad press releases. Fortunately, dear readers, you may still call your credit card company and have them block payments to whatever they're called on your statement.
Huh? I'm sorry, I was thinking about cake.

FSS is gone, HanbitSoft has the rights to Mythos and Hellgate. Mythos, having a business model better suited for asia, is likely going to be continued, but for HGL, the future doesn't look good.

Didn't these guys retain anything from their time making games that were addictive?

Yes, their hubris.

But it's probably like Doom 3, and only 3 of us hate it, we just hate it a lot, right guys? Guys? It's really just nin, Ray and I, right?

Time does not heal all wounds, and I fear I hate the game just as much as I did last fall, if not more so...

Glad to see the GREEDIEST game developer and that HORRIBLE $10 a month rental subscription business model fail, I can't believe these scumbags tried slapping a subscription on a Diablo 1/2 ARPG clone, the BIGGEST ripoff to ever hit he PC.

This game NEEDED to fail, this makes me happy.

It really IS quite unfortunate that they didn't pull off what is a really cool idea for a Guild Wars style game. They had a chance to appeal to a large cross section of gamers....from FPS players to hardcore RPGers to even some RTS players. Like many others though, 5 minutes into the beta it was apparent that this game was far from the level of quality that having Blizzard dev alumni would imply.

I'm not sure if I liked or hated doom 3. The batteries in my flashlight died on the first level, and I had to play the rest of the game using hearing only.

So basically, HanbitSoft want to make Hellgate into a good game but Flagship would rather keep it and run it into the ground.

NEway, this is hilarious. I keep making the mistake of thinking Hellgate will just die a quiet death and everyone will forget about it... yet each time something even more spectacular seems to happen. Watching this unfold is more entertaining than the actual game!

You can't even unsubscribe from the game at the moment. They removed the Subscription button in the account options. What an amazing coincidence that no one can unsubscribe as soon as a massive bad press storm hits.

According to a post on their forums from a moderator:

"Its a bug and there is no ETA on a fix"

If you look at the account page though its no bug, the HTML for the Subscription page was just removed entirely.

I don't know whats more pathetic, the fact that people even play this game at all or the studio's greed.

Also it's actually a myth that this game is "popular" in Korea, it went from the 8th most played game in Korea at its launch to 52nd place now. Korean HGL fans are fed up with the lack of ongoing content which is the whole reason Hanbitsoft wants to take over the IP from Flagcrap studios.

If Hellgate: London is actually popular in Korean then you can pretty much say every MMO made in Korea is complete shit. I mean are Koreans for real? Is this what they call fun?

It would seem from the majority of comments on this game that they appear to have got the name the wrong way around.

Surely "Flagship from the Gate of Hell" would be more apt then "Hellgate from Flagship".

Silly people making such a basic mistake.

None of this would have happened had you not tried to screw over gamers with your bullshit subscription scheme, especially the uber rip off lifetime subscription plan.

Other faults doomed the game.
That just turned it into a complete joke.
