We need a new Carmageddon.

Yes, we do. Sadly every company that tries to make one has apparently been unable to actually complete anything.

I'll probably eventually pick up GRID. The damage modeling looks entertaining.

Something like...Flatout 2?
Ding Ding Ding!!!1 We have a WINNAH! GRID still sucks though, for what it is, what it could be, and what it's trying to be (and isn't).

the crashes are fun but it's still feels like a racer. i wish someone would make a game where the focus is CRASHING and blowing shit up. that's what most of us want when we play these games. my favorite is the arena mode from PS1's destruction derby!

Just one that is similar. This is a game that has slow-motion replays, deformable tyre barriers, a high-degree of damage modelling and a retry button for when you wreck your car. In other words, it's all about crashes, and is more Burnout than GTR. I love GTR2, rFactor, LFS, I've even played netKar Pro and they all offer many-hour sessions of enjoyment. This game instead is a nightly half-hour of stupid fun where no one even pretends to know what a pacejka curve is.
Retry button, yeah, there's some realism for you, lol. This game SUCKS on so many levels.

Simracing is my primary interest when it comes to computer games overall, but I found GRID to be a reasonably fun game. Not enough fun enough to buy it myself, and it certainly doesn't fit into the same category as the serious simulations, but because of that, I don't think a comparison to those is necessarily valid. It would probably be more apt to compare it against GT5 and Forza, neither of which I've tried, since it does aim for at least a modicum of simulation. It does fall into that sort of nebulous zone in between.

I do like the rewind feature. I wouldn't mind seeing something like that in the training modes for serious sims. It would be a lot easier to perfect your braking and lines that way.

Anyways, iRacing is what I'm looking forward to. Any day now.

Hey! i dont get why you keep saying that GRID sucks! comparing it to GTR series is the same as comparing R6Vegas with the first R6. They are not in the same league in terms of gameplay!
But it doesnt make a bad game either! GRID is a superb game. In fact, any racer compared to GTR series would suck balls. Thats wrong.
So, what do you suggest? We compare GRID to a shitty game to make it look better, by comparison?

GTR is a good game, but it has a lot of really snobby fans.

Grid *does* suck.
Yep!
I've been playing GTR for a very long time.
This is why you understand why GRID sucks. Most people on here don't get it (not surprised).

There seems to be 4 types of racer. People who like one tend to dislike the other driving games, although a league above and below may be acceptable.

Pure realism: GTR and RBR (Richard Burns Rally) are a special league. I know nothing of Rfactor, maybe it deserves to be there and I'd put Live For Speed in that group too, of the no-so-high budget (although by no means low budget), realistic driving. Manual gearbox virtually required, H shifter recommended. Console port very unlikely (has there been any pure realism games on consoles?)

Mainstream Realism: like GRID, and maybe Colin McRae, Forza and such like (although I have little or no experience with some of these). This has hard handling, weather, damage, features like that. Manual gearbox optional.

Mainstream Arcade: the big one, Need for Speed, Project Gotham, GT5 (again, haven't even seen all of these so not sure) and numerous budget titles are here. Wide range of budgets and special niches. Manual gearbox available but rarely useful.

Arcade is bottom and this is really just budget titles. Weapons, wacky characters and other such gimmicks all over the place. Manual gearbox rarely even an option.

I like mainstream realism most, GRID is awesome. NFS is fun too but gets boring. I played a fair bit of RBR but I just couldn't stop wreaking my car. GRID handles a bit easier, survives more damage and most significantly, has the flashback feature - the ability to jump back about 5 seconds, a "Prince of Persia: Sands of Time" inspired cheat for humans like the catch-up cheats that AI has used for years in many titles. We'll see flashbacks in more racing games, although to be honest, that's a bad thing IMHO.

I'm having fun with it and I've yet to connect my wheel. It does look damn good, and something about running the other drivers off the road and smashing them all up while trying to keep your car drivable is just plain fun.

The problem I have is that after playing all the hardcore
racing sims with wheel and pedals most of the shiny car games suck monkey balls.

I never get tired of GTR2, Rfactor, and RBR there still fun especially with all the mods that can be downloaded.

When playing with a keyboard I thought the game wasn't very good, car was all over the place, continuous spinning out of control.
Now I hooked up my PS2 controller and the game is a blast! Actually finished first a couple of times and races are fun. Grid really sits between Burnout and Gran Turismo (though it leans more to Burnout :)). Of course, all that is imho ;).

The handling, braking and acceleration of many of the cars in the game appear to have been tweaked quite a bit in 1.1, especially the touring cars. Previously they could accelerate from 0-100 in 3 seconds and top out at 190mph, now they take about 10 seconds to go from 0-100 and top out around 160. Just an example, but a lot of the cars appear to have been tweaked, and for the better I might add. That was my main complaint with this game, along with all the griefing which has also been dealt with pretty well.

Ah yes. It seems I was a bit slow on the uptake. A post that stupid can only be deliberate.
